Initially, it was DVDs/streaming/online piracy etc that allowed people to watch any movie from the comfort of their own home, which is just better - you can lie on your sofa, pause it whenever you like, and not have to pay much or have the hassle of driving to a cinema.
After that, the only movies that did well in cinemas were the kind that benefitted from being seen on a really big screen, with a really good sound system - all those dinosaur movies and Marvel superhero action movies. The problem then was that big screen TVs became affordable (the average now is between 40 and 50 inches, which is immense compared to the TVs we used to have), and all those movies are just very, very shit.

Streaming services and digital video. I can watch a movie at my leisure at home, pausing or stopping it if need be, re-watch parts that I did not quite understand, etc., for far less than sitting in a theater in seats with God knows what on them with noisy, stinky people and insanely priced concessions..

It's definitely a mix of all those things, but I picked B. Streaming Services. I just read an article about this last week. People prefer to watch movies at home. It's difficult to get them out to theatres anymore - and this is long before covid ravaged the planet. So, the movies that get made are large action pics, with a lot of VFX. But that means only one genre, really. Which is so boring, the lack of diversity.

I went to two movies recently, after not having gone to any in ages. Last one was Star Wars. Now I saw Top Gun: Maverick and Bulllet Train. All visually worth seeing in theatres. But the experiences overall were mixed, because of the theatres and capacity/seating issues.

yes, there is a new theater being built in the town 'i live in. These places have multiple screens and they only hold about a hundred people. The movie studios make the movie theaters take all the crappy movies they make so they can take the one or two good movies that are actually made.

Admission was getting too high, annoying people, snacks too high, and you could get a DVD cheaper at Blockbuster Video or other rental stores. Then you could laugh or talk without annoying others. I do remember watching a slasher movie and someone had a bloody knife that they found and the cops were coming. One said to the other, what do we do with it? and someone in the audience yelled "Sit on it!" At least that was amusing unlike other talking by people on their cell phones or telling another the plot because they already saw it. Sometimes you felt like saying. . .

It is a lot of things. Covid has really hurt theaters and now people are used to staying home and watching movies on Netflix. I have a 70 inch TV hooked up to my stereo. It looks and sounds great.

i blame the crappy, politically agenda-driven movies that hollyweird started putting out constantly. Prices were high, but people were still willing to pay them for a GOOD movie, that didn't leave them feeling preached at or that stunk of indoctrination.
