I never read the original story. Is the mermaid's race an important part of it? Off hand I don't see how it matters. The story seems to play out with her having any background.

Going by your logic, Superman can be black, James Bond can be black, Wesker can be black, etc. but it just ruins everything about these characters. Because we grew up with them representing us. By changing their ethnicity, you are basically replacing them as new characters and erasing the original characters.

My point is that for a long time people were complaining about whitewashing but now that it is being replaced by blackwashing, it is considered acceptable. It makes no sense. If whitewashing is bad, blackwashing should be just as bad.
