Um all of the above. I played on more than one device.

Chun Li all the way! But I recall preferring her "pink" outfit over blue 😉... Still do hehe

Original arcade version. The franchise didn't take off until this one, for SF1 was kinda clunky and slow. After playing SF2 for the first time even once, SF1 couldn't have felt like a beta version of SF2 any more obviously, at least to me.
Immediately gravitated toward Zangief. Since at first I was only playing solo or with my Blanka-loving friend on a machine at the local 7-11, I wouldn't really know that he was one of the rarer characters players were interested in until going to the Woodbridge Mall Spaceport Arcade (Woodbridge, NJ) and not only being dumbfounded by the number of people crowding around the two SF2 machines along the back wall, but also at the game level of many players there. It became pretty clear that Ryu, Ken, Blanka and Chun-li were most popular with I guess Guile following close. There was one appearance each from Zangief and Honda. Poor Dhalsim was a no-show.
Eventually I became known simply as Zangief by the known character-dominant players of the group ("Here comes Zangief"/"Hey Zangief, do us a favor and beat this friggin' guy"/[when some new/other guy used Zangief well] "Alright, let the real Zangief show this guy how it's done") for two reasons - 1) acceptance that my skill level was least on par with theirs (and was considered far better than our other Zangief player, who fair enough was at least adequate, and 2) that I physically resembled my character, only nowhere near as tall and with long hair instead of a mohawk.
Let me say the first reason meant way more to me than the second.
All the time as a kid it was my favorite game and i loved picking either Moe or Athena! but Moe is better because she has no powers she just kicks A** lol

and i'm lying the one i played it called king of fighters but it's the same thing right? it's just that every game has different player characters. i played d 4 or 5 of the king of fighters versions on my pc and i spent months and months trying to get the sequence right and eventually i did and i aced all the games but i still played them even if i became a pro.
