Was the character "Rue" from Euphoria basically taken from Basketball Diaries?

Rue begging for drugs.

Leonardo Dicaprio getting help from an ex-addict trying to save him.

Rue getting help from an ex-addict trying to save her.

Yeah I just watched Euphoria seasons 1 & 2 today and Euphoria obviously has some different characters and story lines going on, but the stuff with Rue was pretty close to Basketball Diaries. They should've gave that movie some credit as inspiration in my opinion.

I can't imagine anyone in that business not having seen Basketball Diaries. They even parodied a scene from the movie Titanic at one point on Euphoria.
I think Zendaya did a great job, but I really feel like she was studying Leo's performance because Basketball Diaries was so unique and dark.

Yeah. Im not puting hate on euphoria nor bssketball diaries as basketball diaries came first.. but both did a great job, i love how zendaya act on it, and leo as well..

Rues depression also started way before her dad died. She was diagnosed with OCD, ADD, general anxiety disorder, and possible bipolar disorder in elementary school and was on a cocktail of drugs which she stopped taking after struggling through middle school and started taking her dad's Xanax then eventually his oxycontin while laying next to him because he wouldn't have noticed.
Her dad died when she was 14.

The overall character is very similar to what Leo did, then when they had her crying on the other side of a door, and then her ex-addict trying to save her even looked similar to the guy Basketball Diaries. He was very similar.
Basketball Diaries was such a famous movie for my generation in the 90's, I wouldn't expect kids your age to immediately recognize all the scenes in Euphoria that were inspired by Basketball Diaries, but I noticed it constantly while watching Euphoria.

Watch any movie or tv show about addiction and you will notice the same themes.

Just because they both show what is known to be behavior of an addict doesn't mean one is copying or inspired by another.

Basketball Diaries came out in 1995 and it was ground breaking for it's time and based on a true story.

Okay I've done some looking around and the euphoria creator has gone on record to say that he takes inspiration from many forms of art and pay homage to them in euphoria one being basketball diaries specifically the banging on drug dealers doors scene.

Others include Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde, Ghost, Goodfellas, and Titanic.

Nice, I thought I was right about that.
That guy had some cool stuff in that series, I liked some of the relationships and drama, but the drug addicted stuff was too much like Basketball Diaries for me, but I guess if you wait long enough it seems original and interesting to a younger generation again.

I can't argue with you there.
There's moments of brilliance, but sometimes there's so many flashbacks and weird segments that are a bit difficult to follow at times.
