Should world book day be banned?

Thursday is world book day. Which means on Wednesday night little children everywhere just before bed will utter the words "mummy I need a costume for tomorrow."

Mummy will silently swear, knock back a bottle of wine and try to cobble something together out of a tea towel and a bin bag. The problem is her inadequate literature knowledge means she can only name three childrens books and even if she googles one she knows it has to be a character everyone recognises or her kid will look stupid.

So best play safe, a golliwog from Noddy and Bigears should impress the other parents. Little Johny then comes home in tears because everyone else dressed as harry potter.

World book day just causes misery for parents and embarrases kids as they're forced to explain over and over who they're supposed to be. Most of them have never actually read the book and are basing it off a Disney cartoon anyway.

I say ban it, what say you?
