Is it harder for new metal/rock/punk bands to be a "shocker band'?

I know I'm a 2000s baby, but diving into the history of heavy music it seems like it was easier for bands to "shock" in earlier times due to the way society and culture was. We had Alice Cooper, King Diamond, Venom, Mayhem (especially the few years when Dead was the vocalist and on with band drama after his death). Can't forget to mention GG Allin as well, it would be blasphemous not to.

There were many more than those few, but even at one time KISS shocked their audience too but in this day and age they seem cheeseballish to the younger generation. There are a lot of great newer heavy bands as well, but does it seem like it is more difficult for newer bands to give a hard shock value? What do you think?

The last time I legitimately felt this about music was when I heard SOPHIE (RIP)… it was so weird, unsettling, and “out-there”…

The production hit so different… it almost felt “3D”… incredibly vivid and unlike anything I had ever heard before. Other tracks are incredibly vibey and feel like they’re coming from like a different planet or dimension or something… Just… very different. Odd, very dissonant, but intriguing IMO… like a car crash that you couldn’t take your eyes off of… honestly blew my mind.

I think as far as rock music goes, it would almost have to become something like this, or do some wild production tricks to accomplish that “shock factor” I can actually think of a couple recent examples…

It’s more the FEELING you get from the production and the offbeats when that drop hits, again some almost “3D”sounds happening in the mix, after the long, detuned build-up… almost like you’re descending down a hole, and then it finally HITS… like this song takes you from bright vibrant sounds down to a really dark place… and I think with some great modern production, it really sells you on that unsettling “pit of your stomach” feeling when the payoff hits. Also… detuned pitch and pitched vocals in music is becoming more of a thing…

I don't know, there’s a lot of interesting things happening out there. Heavily contrasting sounds and frequencies.

Rock is a music type that can not change as classic music that would not change and that is why people keep on. Dont need to be shocker especially.

Nothing shocks anymore, so music has become safe. Even some extreme metal bands have a mainstream acceptance.

Unless you do something new and different, you can't "shock".

And KISS was just as cheezy in 1976 as they were today.

I really think so. There's not much new bands can do to shock people that Ozzy, Alice Cooper, and Rammstein haven't already done. Its a tough market now.
