Do you ever feel like you could be a DJ?

I’ve always had a love for music, but only until recent years do I feel like I developed something deeper for it, especially dance music.

I’ve always liked it, but never really felt like it was ever as good as it could get. It just sounded like loops, the same few bars over and over. But now dance music is so broad and well developed. Artists pull in so many worldly movements and sounds into their work and it amalgamates into these sweeping, shifting works, COUPLED with the modern technology of music production and you just get these insane sounds and grooves.

And it’s like I really had to grow into these ideas and perceptions as well. Experience some crazy times on a dance floor myself to really feel what modern music was all about. Now it just seems like there’s more and more stuff coming out at a rapid pace that I feel like represents my love for this music if that makes sense.

It’s like a new wave. Almost like it didn’t even exist before so I had no concept of what it would even be like to DJ and mix and all that, but now the idea excites me like never before.

Ever since I was a little kid!! It'll probably never happen, though! I've been trying all my life and can't get an air shift no matter who I kill or sleep with!!

I didn't know there WAS such a thing as modern music!

WE had dance music back in the `60's! Every week, there was a new dance somebody came up with. The twist, the peppermint twist, the shag, the fruge, the funky chicken, the monkey, the slop, the boogaloo, the shing-a-ling,. the jerk, the watusi, etc.. There were loads of dances from the 1600's up to the `60's, to. Now, it's just a bunch of kids jumping around like they're trying to get bugs off them.

I was a DJ For many years, and yes I learned to mix on decks back in the days before Serato, or DAWs. But having a love for music isn't only what it's about, although it helps to know your audience, but you have to have the personality as well as being able to captivate a crowd of a thousand people or more.

You also have to be prepared for when things go wrong, like power outages for example.

This might sound a little crazy, but when I look around where I’m at currently, it’s just so stuck on old ideas. It’s like I almost see DJing like if someone could get a few gigs and bring some contemporary sounds to the table, it’s like ripe to build up a new local scene from the ground up.

Obviously it wouldn’t be that easy, but it’s an idea that really excites me. Like you said, knowing the crowd, but it’s like knowing that you could be out there playing stuff they’ve never heard before. That sounds cool to me. It could go badly or could be a great thing lol.

I get you wish to be seen as something new and very different to everyone else, but if you try that from the start, you are one bad experience away from quitting. You first need to establish yourself much the same as everyone else, and then learn to build your own style as you work.. This will happen over time, but it is impossible from the outset!
The only way in which that can happen, is if music takes an instant change that all the kids want to hear, and you being in the right place at the right time, advertise yourself as a specialist in that genre. Personally though? I always believed in playing percentages.

Yeah it’s probably partially my thinking due to the internet too, you could just upload sets or stream and whoever likes you can tune in from wherever. But yes you are kind of limited to the interests of your local community, I could see that.

I know a guy who paid for his $35,000 a year law school tuition at York by working as a D. J. on the weekends. He said he could make over $800 a day doing that. I would not want to cause I don't like loud noises and it would be hard to serve hundreds of customers at the same time cause it means you can't make mistakes.

Like even a couple hundred bucks more a week would be nice! But $800 a day/weekend would be awesome!

I'd rather make music myself - and without any commercial interest; ... the way it had been once.

I never said I didn’t want to make it either myself, I do… but I think knowing that a lot of people simply aren't ever going to hear what you want to play for them, is valuable. Music isn’t just funneled through a couple of radio stations anymore. It’s like a great way to bring awareness to stuff that frankly a ton of people don’t even realize that it exists. And in turn, they can help support the artists that aren’t getting the attention they deserve. I guess it depends on your intentions too right? Like if you’re just going to weddings and DJing Maroon 5 and all the “has been’s” of 20+ years ago, that’s just further catering to cultural stagnation.

I used to announce on AM radio. News. I still have The Voice (like Michael Buffer) but I never did music.
