She truly is an unforeseen miracle.
My mother was 54 at the time and had undergone hip reconstruction surgery after being kicked by a horse. She had also been treated for cancer (benign). To our astonishment and somewhat concern, she was 3 months pregnant!
I remember being picked up from school by my older brother's fiancée and driven straight to hospital: "You're going to have a sister!" she exclaimed.
There she was, lying in an incubator, no bigger than a can of beer and the weight of 2 bags of pasta (or so my dad says). She was tiny.
She was born with only a single functioning lung, but despite the doctor's warnings and trepidations, she made it through thick and thin and has since grown into a devilishly and unquestionably bright young girl. A real chatterbox too.
One cannot fathom the extent of my love for her. She means the world to me and more, and although I'm not really that religious, a gift from God.
Every year is a blessing.
