This is for all the girls out there, who has crushed a bit on their best friend’s older brother.
Apparently, it happens a lot. It has happened to me quite a few times actually;)
But why is that? What makes those older brothers so damn fascinating? I think I’ve cracked the code and I call my theory ‘The Older Brother Syndrome’. (Also known as the OBS)
This theory also covers crushing on your older brother’s friends. I believe it’s the same things that occur in both cases.
So let's just get to it, shall we?
1. You like him, because he is off limits to you
You probably aren't really allowed to like him and that's the appeal. He is the ONE person you can't like and tell your friends about. It's wrong and therefore even hotter. Your best friend might even forbid it - she doesn't want her bff dating her brother, cause that's gross right? - but not to you. It only makes you want him more.
2. He is experienced and mysterious
He is older than you and probably more mature than guys your age, and girls tend to go for older guys in general. Plus, he has always been that mysterious presence in the house, whenever you've visited your bff. Every now and then, you've caught a glimpse of him - that mysterious older guy you aren't ever supposed to have a crush on, but you do.
But let's be honest here. Is he really the kind of guy you'd normally fall for? He's probably not even that attractive, when you think about it. If you met him out in the city and there was no correlation between him and your bff, you'd probably never go for a guy like him. No, it's not his appearance that makes you like him. It's the 'forbidden' part. It's like, when people in relationships cheat with a mistress. It's so hot, because it's wrong and you can get caught, but once you get caught and your spouse leaves you - it's not that exciting anymore. But that's what drives the sexappeal. The danger goes hand in hand with the passion.
3. You get to fantasize about him
Your bff can't see what goes on in your mind. So that is likely, where the fantasy is being lived. In your fantasy, he wants you as much as you want him, but your bff can never know about it - so you get together in the hidden and that is where the magic happens. Whatever your fantasy is, it probably revolves around you guys having to keep it a secret from your bff.
4. He probably has some of the same qualities you love in your best friend
Your best friend and her brother probably have some of the same awesome qualities. Therefore, her brother is everything you love in your bff, but in a male version. That's the dream! Throughout the years, your bff has probably told you many stories about her brother - each and everyone of them helps to build your idea of him. You feel like you know him, but you don't reeeally know him. You want to get to know his secrets - what's his soft side? Could you make him fall in love with you?
But of course, all of this is just a fantasy. Your crush is just a crush and it should probably stay that way. No boy, not even your best friend's handsome older brother, is worth losing a friend over. Remember, that you only lust after him, you don't love him - and you only want him, because you can't have him. And if it's your own brother's best friend you crush on - also leave it - don't screw up their friendship.
And last of all; do not EVER tell your best friend that you're suffering from The Older Brother Syndrome - she can never know!
