When your boyfriend said "I'm lonely", what does it mean?

I was having a nice conversation with my boyfriend and suddenly he said to me "I'm lonely, I'm Mr. lonely". I didn't understand why he said that. I thought about it a few days and I thought maybe he was not happy with me or the relationship we had is not what he was looking for. Anybody can help me with this? Was he trying to hint me something? thanks.

I would recommend taking his comment at face value. Most people feel lonely at various points, regardless of who they are with or around. And if his age is similar to yours, he may be comparing himself to other men he knows who are currently married with children (I obviously don't know if he has children himself), and thinking that his life is not as stable and complete as theirs, or as he had imagined that his would be at this point. In any case, I would not take it as a criticism of you, but rather as a compliment that he was willing to open up to you in this way. If you'd like, you can ask to to expand on his comment later, but do so in the spirit that you'd like to understand him better, and not in a defensive "why don't I make you happy" way.

Thanks for you answer. Well, he is younger than me, working abroad (no children) so we only communicate via texts, I'm and tele-conversation. We don't really communicate often as we both are pretty busy with our works.

Well in that case, it would make sense that he is lonely. I definitely would not take it as a criticism of you, I think that he was just being honest about his situation.
