Why will a guy become close to you and then suddenly act distant?

This fall, I became really close to one of my guy friends who've I have known for over a year. We've always been good friends, but we became particularly close at the beginning of the school year and stayed that way for a while. I developed a bit of a crush on him, but he had a lot of stuff going on in his life, and because I valued his friendship and didn't want to mess things up, I kept it to myself. Well, in the past few months, he has started acting distant and it's really upsetting to me. He's really close to this other girl now, but apparently they have a purely platonic relationship (this other girl has a boyfriend) but I still feel completely left behind. And now he's giving me the hot and cold treatment - sometimes when he sees me he smiles and says hi, other times he blatantly ignores me. I really don't understand what the deal is though - I never told him or anyone else that I liked him, and even when we were close I always took precautions to give him his space when he needed it and never smother him. He used to be someone I was completely comfortable around and now it feels like I'm walking on eggshells when I'm around him. What the heck? :(

The best advice I can give is to talk to him about it. If you truly want to work on reestablishing your friendship then maybe you should bring up the change you have noticed and how you feel about it.Dont bring up the other girl,(that would sound like a jealousy rant)just the two of you. You've got to understand,when folks make abrupt changes...sometimes it has NOTHING to do with you. It's them and where they are in their own lives. Anything could be going on with him...anything.So just talk to him. Please give updates!:) Good luck!

Maybe the deal is that he did like you, but he might have thought that he wasn't getting anywhere with it. Or that he realized that he liked this other girl more.I've been in this situation as a guy and it sucks, but the only way to know for sure is to ask him about it, because everyone is different and has their own agendas. Maybe throw him a text asking to hangout, or to get lunch or something, and then ask him what's been going on, but make sure he doesn't avoid the question.
