My crush avoids me, why?

So, I've had a crush on a guy for a while. Iv gotten to talk to his friends and I've joked with him in class. At lunch time he sits on another table but always faces me and he watches me the entire time. So I wemt as far as to ask him for his number and he said "ask someone for it" and I took that as a no. So I said, "I'm not doing that". It was already hard for me to even ask him. Let alone ask someone else for it. I noticed he recently started avoiding me. At lunch when he's behind me he will walk away and go around to get away from me. In the mornings I come in for extra help and so does he and Ill sit next to his friends and him (I am friends with his friends) and he will purposely move desks. So I thought, maybe he just didn't like me. So I gave up. Yet he continued to watch me at lunch. Mind you I sit on the back wall so noone is behind me. So I thought maybe I was mistaken and I decided with my friends to sit somewhere else. On a table on his far left behind him. And he did a shoulder look towards me and asked his friend to switch seats and watched me! In class he will watch me talk to my friends and he would smile at my stories. And once I asked him for a piece of candy and he said no. Then walked passed me and gave me the whole bag. And everyone thought that was so odd as he is very serious. But then again he will still avoid being around me when he gets the chance to. I don't get it... One time his friends came up to me to talk to me (at this point they became close with me and we talked all the time) and he just randomly just turned around and walked away. Why is he like this? I don't get it?
