In countries such as; India, Pakistan, China, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc. sons are preferred over daughter because of several reasons not in any order.
1. religious/cultural - in Hinduism and some Chinese folk religions, it's seen as a son's duty to light the parent's funeral pyre and conduct rituals the absence of which would prevent or make difficult the process of salvation or release from this worldly life.
2. social - men are supposed to take care of the parents in old age, while females are supposed to depart her parent's household after marriage. Any sexual assault on the girl renders her impure and unviable for marriage hence no man would marry her, this also goes for any credible accusation of elopement or affair.
3. economic - men are supposed to earn living particularly in an agrarian society and bring home the money and contribute to the household income whereas women are supposed to do traditional unpaid labor around the house.
4. dowry - this is a big one so I didn't mention under social. On marriage the woman's family is supposed to pay a large amount to the groom in lieu of her marrying socially "up" (a woman's only scope of upward social mobility), this dowry can ruin families because they take loans and borrow from relatives to pay this dowry.
So, in conclusion a woman is seen as a very delicate and expensive liability, hence a son is preferred over her. Either there is what is called sex selective abortions whereby the fetus is aborted after the sex is determined, which is illegal. Or there is female infanticide which is illegal or abandonment which is also illegal.
I feel like they still are preferred. A son will carry forward your parents legacy and name and a girl would almost never do so. I want both a son and daughter

Well for a woman to be treated worthless it was always the situation for women since dark ages, they were enslaving girls and for a father when he get a girl as child he used to burry her alive so as not to be humiliated and that other men will use her and enslave her and treat her like an object, until the beginning of Islam where the messenger of Allaah the almighty Muhammad salla Allaah aleih wa sallam was sent with Allaahās message to people to treat girls properly and respect life in general and not to be ashamed of having getting girls child and to stop immediately enslave girls or treat them like objects and that women has the right to live with free will. Look at who pays most taxes today? Men. Who pays alimony in 99% of divorce cases? Men. This is at a time when more women work than ever before. More women have university degrees. And so on. So going back in time.. of course a male would be worth more. And it didn't have to be in actual cash, it could have just been the fact he could work hard for 10-12 hours a day doing back breaking work. Yes, women have done that in history too but their version of it is sitting and knitting. Not carrying sacks of stones or hauling 100+ pound logs. It's just not the same.

@Enigma07 I don't think they rule the world. They heavily influence and indirectly control a lot in western society. Traditional men just have to keep being good role models for young men and others. Eventually when there's a major disaster/war, all of the feminist will suddenly become traditional and things will get reset. Sons keep your family name, have the responsibility of taking care of the parents in their old age (in places like China), can work more/harder than females (which is especially important in places like rural China when you have a one child policy), and it also just seems that in certain cultures boys are just seen as innately more valuable than girls (Middle Eastern and Chinese, for example).
This all has led to a literal shortage of women in China, where there's around 200 million fewer women, very noticeable in rural areas, which leads to human trafficking.

Men are generally physically stronger and have more dominant traits than women. Having more dominant traits gives them a higher chance of getting on top of the social pyramid than women. This still hasn't changed. That's why there's still an average wage gap. Men are generally more assertive and less agreeable.
In places like India girls are worth nothing to most families. I have even heard of stories here in the UK of Indian families when finding out the sex of the baby will deliberately try and kill it.

Only north, south, and western states are like that. In eastern states like (7-8) out of 30, women are regarded very highly in households. They get equal or more status like guys. They are the head of families in many northeastern states. They excel in every field as guys and people from eastern states produce the most intelligent people in India, including all Oscar, Nobel laureates, top scientists, and doctors.
India is a collection of states and every state has its own culture, language, and food. It's very different from state to state. Nobody treats women as less in my area. I work at a university and have multiple female friends from the UK who work in Oxford, RAL, or other universities and they love it here. But unlike you, they are not dimwitted and racist. Every country has problems. Most good people don't support them anywhere.

Youāre probably talking about the rural folks. Theyāre illiterate and it may be prevalent there. I live in a big city and it doesnāt happen here (not that I know of). People here are more open minded and educated. The usage of the word āmostā is bit of an exaggeration. Iām sure female infanticides still happen in parts of India, but it is not āmostā of the Indian population. Iām a girl and my parents were ecstatic when I was born.. and so were the parents of my girl friends when they were born.

India still has problems with sexism, racism, homophobia etc. If people want the country to be better, we need to start by becoming self aware and be the change we want to see in the world. Just because you and I have not seen women being treated as inferior to men does not mean that it doesnāt happen.
In China they used to kill their daughters back when they were only allowed one kid per couple. Only males were legally allowed to own property and businesses so people wanted a son. Their population decreased from 1.6 billion down to 1.3billion people.

Sons were preferred because throughout moat of human history muscle power is what worked the land, raised the cattle, grew the crops, and kept you fed. My friends have told me that the reason they want a boy is that girls seem to be more "complicated" and harder to take care of. Sons will make more money so they can help you more as you age. in many countries the care of old people is expected to come from their kids. Many people have kids with this in mind. Men will do better at financial support, they also accumulate more accolades which reflects better on the parents while women tend to marry up and accomplish less. Itās more reliable to raise a component son than to hope that your daughter can bring in a competent son in law.

In the past, this was the case because wars and battles were taking place the whole time. Nowadays, I don't think this is true. In general, I would say that sons tend to bond more with their mothers and daughters tend to bond more with their dads.

Re: your update. Several cultures have historically required a "price" for marriage. Some cultures required the groom's family to pay the bride's family; some the reverse, the bride's family pays the groom's family a dowry.
In the US, that doesn't exist, although there are remnants of it. The groom's family is expected to pay for the rehearsal dinner, typically the night before the wedding, and the bride's family is expected to pay for the wedding and wedding reception.
