How to say 'babe' without sounding like a douche?

This is actually for a story I'm writing, and I want to make the one guy use 'babe' when talking to his girlfriend, but I don't want to make him sound like a douche bag. I know that this is very possible because a guy once called me 'baby' and I was like... you're joking, right?

He was not, but anyways, just wondering if guys that say this conciously think about when they do or don't use nicknames like this. Like when you see a guy talking to your girlfriend you might go up to her and say 'hey babe/baby/sweetheart' to show right away that the guy doesn't have a chance, but I'm thinking there's times when you wouldn't? Eh? Not sure. Need your thoughts.

This is the context I used it as in one of my writes;

" Are you available for a, er, movie Friday night?" (Guy)

The two of them snickered; movie nights were the best.



" Sounds good to me." (Girl)

" Okay babe." (Guy)

I think it sounds pretty casual when it's used spaciously, like not every time he talks to her, but maybe to conclude their conversation, or when they see each other like " Hey babe - " Plus, I'd think you'd need some more context in order to get the sense he was a douche - EX:

Coven pecked her lightly on the lips, of course she was available. Whenever he wanted. Genna rolled her eyes in his perephial vision, clearly bothered by her ditzy friend and the jerk playing her. Coven didn't care much for anyone's opinion on his doings, but something about Genna's picked at him. At times he did feel kind of bad for treating girls the way he did, but Amber just made it too easy.



" Are you available for a, er, movie Friday night?"

" Sounds good to me."

" Okay baby."

(with the extra paragraph at the beginning kind of showing what the guy thinks of the situation, sort of hints that he's kind of a douche bag...)

I don't know about all guys, but my boyfriend calls me babe when he's saying something sweet, or like - I don't know, when we're talking on the phone late at night and he can tell I'm getting sleepy he'll go, "you tired babe?" it doesn't sound douchey at all as long as it's followed by a sentence that shows he likes or cares about me.

For me I can't even hear the word without wanting to cringe. does anyone remember that old 90's mtv cartoon Daria? The football jock character would call his Girlfriend babe like every 3 seconds. utterly disgusting >_<
