What happens when a twin dies and the other survives?

When my father suddenly passed away, one of the most affected is my aunt, his sister, since they were fraternal twins.

My mother, we children and my father's widow are slowly moving on, but my aunt has gotten extremely depressed, to the point we are afraid she might just die of heartbreak. We always have someone assistiting her, she's 64 but she looks like she suddenly aged of at least ten years.

When a couple has been married a long time and one dies, the average life expectancy for the surviving spouse is 6 months.

I'm not sure about twins. I knew twin girls and one was killed in a car accident at 16. The other twin died less than a year later of some illness she acquired after the death of her sister.

Your aunt is in deep mourning, but it doesn't mean she will die. She needs grief counseling or a support group.

It's terrible what happened to those sisters, heartbreak is indeed real. It happened in my town that a woman' son, around my age, was diagnosed with fourth stage cancer. She supported him until the day he passed away. After he died, she lingered some six months before dying of heart attack. She was barely 45.

I can't imagine how that kind of loss affects the surviving twin, especially if they had a close relationship with each other, I guess it's like losing a part of you. I would recommend urging your aunt to speak to a support group or counselor

Thank you. That's something my aunt' son, my cousin, suggested as well, but she keeps saying she wants to be left in peace. She still comes out on walks and other activities if prompted, so we point on that, and also have her see and play with my daughter and my sister' son.

It's good if she still goes for walks with you and your family. I'd say to give her a bit more time. Grief is a normal and natural response to loss, especially if it's a recent one

I haven't seen her since it happened, but the twin sister of my friend's wife died last year. They lived in the same city and did a lot together. Not sure how she took it.

By her I mean the wife, not her sister...

It depends on their relationship. But it seems like your father and aunt's relationship was very close so his death was detrimental to her.

Yes, they were very close and always worked together, even they made their own families.

Yes, people dying of a broken heart is not uncommon among the elderly. And I guess 64 is elderly.
