It is important to pass down the family name?

I admit it's a big worry for me, and since a male child is a distant fantasy for now - apparently I'm destined to have only daughters - I have to study some workarounds.

Initially my wife and I had considered either an hyphenated name - like we did with our first daughter - and then considered giving her surname to any further female child and my own to any male child. But since the twins will both girls I'm not too eager for both of them to have her surname, especially because I conceded for them to have Germanic first names (my grandfather would roll in the grave for this).

So unless we manager to get a fourth and hopefully male child, we are considering giving them my surname - or strike my wife's surname from our eldest and make her my full heir. Which was kind of my idea from the start, but we must also stress that any children she might have must take hers - and my - surname and not of the father's. Otherwise, I could also make my half-brother my heir, but he's not exactly my first choice.

I have all daughters. Four to be exact. I really never thought about continuing my name, probably because my brother has two sons. I was more concerned about being out numbered 4 to 1 in my house but as luck would have it, my wife has it worse! My daughters adore me and I them. We gang up on my wife.

Ha Ha! I also have four daughters! My wife and them pretty much tolerate me. I can't do anything right! I used to smoke but quit. Not for health reasons or because it cost too much $, it was because they they annoyed the hell out of me about it! I couldn't take it anymore! It's like that with the way I eat, the fact I have a few beers every now, the way I dress, literally, everything I do! Pray for me.

Important. Was engaged to a woman way back who wanted to keep her maiden name after we married and maybe give our children either her name or a hyphenated version, I wasn't for that and she was adamant about so eventually I left her.

I don't see why. Every name we have now was added at some point, usually as a reference to a place of origin (also named at some point) or a family business or trade. And those names changed over time. Lots of U. S. family names were altered when the people came here. Just among people running for POTUS in the last 60 years there are at least three examples: Goldwater (Goldwasser), Hart (Hartpence - changed by Gary Hrt himself), and Trump (Drumpf).
