Aunt is INSISTING and GUILT TRIPPING me to give the dog she GIFTED me 2 MONTHS AGO?

basiclally my aunt wanted to get rid of her 3 and 1/2 year old chihuahua because she wasn’t home much to care of her and she was about to go to Europe for 1 month.

I offered to take her because she knows me and I really love her, she gets along with my family and we all adore her. She agreed to give the dog to us PERMANENTLY. She dropped her off to us almost 3 months ago and we’ve had her ever since.

We have loved her so much, she is never alone, gets treated very well and has settled into her new home and loves us all. About 2 weeks ago my aunt rings us and says she wants her back and that she made the wrong decision to give her up. BUT she gave her up because she was gallivanting to Europe here there and everywhere. Even her husband agreed to give the dog to us.

We said No, No, No sorry you can’t have her back because it’s not only fair on the dog it’s unfair on us to get attached. She’s been calling trying to guilt trip me in giving her back saying she made a mistake and that we can buy our own dog.

I sent her proof that she is now under my name and she responds with “I don’t care” and blah blah. She doesn’t want anything to do with my mum (her sister) or me if we dont give her back.

she’s very wealthy and could easily buy a new dog and so on, she’s also gone away so many times the time she’s had the dog that the dog was in kennels a lot of the time while they went on holiday.

i love my beloved 15 year old dog this year due to cancer and was devastated so I’ve really bonded with this beautiful dog.

i don’t know what to do, do I cut contact with her or what?

please help

She is willing to cut ties with you and her sister over a pet dispute? Well... let it be then. She is nuts. If she really loved the dog at least she will try to keep in touch to check on the dog from time to time if she really loved him so much.

Its not even Healthy for the dog to be with a pet owner who is willing to give them up so easily. Just to change their mind later.

I gave you an advice last time and it will be the same this time too. Give her a lesson of keeping her word next time. And dont give the dog back

I would respond in a stern voice, something like. No I am not giving the dog to you. You gave the dog up because you said you weren't home much and because you went to Europe. The dog is now not only registered under my name and I am the legal owner, but for months I have been looking after her, taking care of her and loving her. I am not giving up my fur baby so stop asking me to because the answer is no.

If you find she still won't take no. I would cut contact with her.

Do not give in and give the dog up. She clearly from what you have said weren't taking care of the dog in the first place where you are. If she truly wanted the dog, she should never have given her up.

I feel if she truly wanted the dog she could have made arrangements for somewhere she could have stayed but got her back after she came back from Europe.

She works full time and no one would even be home with the dog much.

It’s hard but I may have to cut contact because I truly believe what she’s doing is shit and I really absolutely adore my dog

Exactly. If you love your animal you would take care of them and make arrangements when you are going away but she done none of this instead she abandoned the dog when she gave her up.

You don't need someone like that in your life. Keep your fur baby and ignore your aunt. Your dog loves you more than she does your aunt

Since the dog is in your name, there is legally nothing she can do about it

You can talk to her again , but if she is stubborn then I think you will have to choose between your aunt and the dog.

Yeah, so either cut her off and keep the dog or return the dog

by the way how far is her home from yours?

You will have to cut her off completely. Her demand that you return the dog after this passage of time is completely unreasonable.

There is another option which you won't like so I merely mention it in passing. Since she's super wealthy you could offer to sell the dog back at an absurdly inflated price. What? I said you wouldn't like it.

I know but it’s gotten to the point now where I initially took the advice and said No, No, No but now she’s insisting and it sounds like she wants to come over and physically take her

So cutting contact is the only way, sad it’s come to this
