Would you feel happier having a child of your own at some point in your life or never having a child and only having pets?
Pets -are- considered children for most of us- so let's put that out there as a disclaimer: they need almost the same care, food, love, and attention as a human child in most cases.
With that being said, I am probably going to offend or step on some toes, but I MUCH rather have a dog than a child any day. Obviously, this is going to vary based on the person, but for those of us that do not like or want children, a pet is probably the better option.
For one things, pets are less stress. Pets are proven to boost your mood (serotonin levels). Do kids do that? Last I checked, kids are usually the cause of stress... just saying, lol.
Not to mention, it's cheaper to own pets than kids, they don't talk back to you (in a negative way; yes, I know some animals can "talk" back to their owners). They have unconditional love for you- can't say that for kids.
And some of us just don't like kids. Why reproduce or bring a child onto this planet just for the sake of saying, "I have an heir and someone to take care of me when I'm older!" There's no guarantee they will want to take care of you when you're older, or be around to do so (and if you have a child for that reason alone, I feel bad for you). Not to mention, some people are not good with kids... or other humans in general. Yet wonderful with animals.

I am missing the "Neither" vote on your list.
I don't plan to have any children of my own nor to adopt any. I find it almost a crime to bring a child into this planet knowing at what rate we are destroying it. There will be no future for children born today.
As for pets, I don't want any because you are tied when you have pets. Your freedom is gone, just like it is gone when you have a boyfriend/partner/SO/husband.
I love animals but I would not want to own one. I grew up in a household that had a dog. I was very close to it and I was devastated for a long time when the dog died. I don't want to have to go over that sorrow again.
Pets only last a few years or so. Kids are a lifetime thing. They'll, generally, outlast you! And, remember, a pet is just somebody else's kid.
Pets are a lot of fun to have around and, if you give them love, chances are, they'll give it back to you at least two-fold but, you can't hold conversations with them or play cards with them, they have no clue what music is and, no matter how close they are to you, they won't pick you up at the airport! Kids can learn all that stuff, converse with you, go places and do things with you, etc.. If I had the money and was assured a place for us to live, I'd adopt a couple right now! I'd MUCH rather make my own but, it's looking like that'll never happen! No girl wants to fuck me, let alone take a chance on being in love with me, or even a good friend! So, it looks like I'll never have kids of my own! I can't even afford a pet, at the moment! The best I can do is the bunnies in the front yard that come around every couple days to beg for bread.
I can’t have pets; animals wreak havoc with my OCD, and the owners of the building I’m in make one jump through a lot of hoops and pay extra even to have a cat. As for kids, I’m not capable of raising any of my own, I find the idea of the conception process repulsive, and I volunteer at an elementary school anyway, so I can make a positive difference in the lives of many kids.

Pets are cheaper and their lifecycle is shorter. However the ROI is terrible.
Seriously though, children allow you to experience a lot of stuff that you otherwise would not (or don't remember) and provide you with an ongoing connection with the world.
If you have one of each, you get to see why both little girls and little boys are the way they are.Have both pets and children. I love the pets but the children are reflections of the love my wife and I have.
Having a child is better, nut it's good to have a pet first, to see how good a parent you would be.
Personally, I would be much happier with pets. That's not the case for everyone though.
I can only vote pet. I can't have babies ever.
Pets are great but they don't compare to having a child.
Sometimes I regret having kids tbh. 3 but I chastise myself too cuz that's what I thought I wanted. I didn't respect the sacrifices involved
Childern are less annoying then pets
Having a child of my own is better imho.
