Is it selfish not to 'reciprocate' telling friends about your personal life?

I hear people complain about friends who don't share anything about themselves, after they have shared all kinds of things about themselves. Does that say just as many negative things about the complainer as their so called 'one-sided' friend?

First we have to define 'friend'. A real true friend is someone that cares about you and is there for you through the rough times as well. You've learned that you can trust that person.
I wouldn't share my personal life with someone that wasn't a real friend. Maybe I would share trivial things with them but that's it.

You have to be careful about what you say to people that you think are your friends because they can always take what you have shared with them and use it against you in the future.

I've had situations come up where I thought I was cultivating a connection with someone, but the other person just started being shitty, obstinent and generally difficult. This person who says they value my friendship starts putting up walls and making me feel like an inconvenience for caring about them.

Friends tell friends things that they are comfortable with. That doesn't mean every nitty gritty detail. Tell what you want, and don't feel bad if it's not as personal as what your friend told you.
