My parents were rather strict. I had a very early curfew in high school, I was never allowed to go to sleepovers. They were very particular about respect, manners and appearances, and overall neatness.
I don't think I am as strict with my own kids. I do try to instill respect and manners in them, and while they have freedoms to be with friends, I do pay close attention to who they're hanging out with and where they're going.
I rarely saw my parents when I was a kid, and by the age of 12 I was abandoned and living with a cousin. Aside from school, music and books were my primary sources of education, guidance, and inspiration in life. I was even cooking for myself by the time I was 8. I had to grow up and learn fast. I was working full time and helping to pay rent for an apartment by the time I was 16 because I had no other option at that point.
I got hit and screamed at, so I'd never do that to a child of mine.
