Could reporting your own child for a serious crime be a parent’s second-worst pain?

One of my co-workers told me about a man that found out his adult son (and only child; the wife died giving birth) had committed rape against two college girls. He found out about it through a journal and he wanted to continue doing it.

With so much pain the father turned him over. He continues to visit his child in prison. To that man, he was still the baby he held in his arms for the first time, heard his first cries, raised him, heard his first words, saw him growing, etc. Yeah he still loves his son but doesn't approve of the terrible choice he made. He has apologized to the 2 victims' families. He still battles with that decision, wonders if it was right, if he betrayed his own blood or if there was no other choice. He also felt bad for the victims and felt he couldn't let someone dangerous roam in society, even if it was his own child.

I know the worst pain for a parent is the loss of a child or their child getting hurt badly. How about having to report your own child for a severe crime (either that or pretend nothing happened and your child continues doing it)? Would that be the 2nd worst pain ever for a parent to undergo?

According to what my co-worker said, that man has aged badly since. He has gotten older faster, has trouble sleeping and seems deteriorated in healthy. It has taken a toll on him.
