Makeup Isn't Really Considered Art

People nowadays are very open to makeup, saying how it expresses them well and how it's a form of art. But that's not really true.

How can makeup express you when your makeup is the same as the millions of other girls on instagram? Instagram makeup isn't art. Over lining your lips isn't art. Concealing your blemishes isn't art.

Yes, makeup can be art if it was meant for drag, costumes, transformations, etc. Those are really cool and it can be appreciated as a form of art.

And also, yes eye makeup can be pretty artistic. From using bold colours, to cut crease liners, etc. But if you're going to be wearing the typical kind of eye looks and then claiming it expresses you, then maybe basic would suit you best. Your face can be a canvas, but not everyone can create art.

How many times have you seen looks like this?

Art is supposed to be unique. It's supposed to stand out. If you ask me, a bare face is more artistic than flawless makeup because everyone looks different and imperfections are beautiful. But I'm not a liar, actual artistic makeup is definitely more interesting to look at.

It's great that people don't wear makeup because they are insecure, but because they like it. But to say it's a form of art when the look is basic af, I don't think so.

Very true, it really isn't a form of expression, more a form of repression. I have to look like this or that. Then comes the fashion, the posing the jealousy of Instagram models and magazines. I have a friend who is like this and she is a great person, has a career and is moving towards a better standing, but she is into all this crap pop culture, makeup, posing and it kind of drives me crazy, not in a good way. She's always expressing what she hates about herself and it's annoying, I used to like her, but that crap urned me off almost completely

for the standard makeup - if it isn't art because it's so commonplace then you could say the same for still life paintings... Yeah... you've seen all of it before... it's not art...

Life paintings are different. Oils, watercolour, and other different mediums are being used. And most importantly, there's always a story behind it which makes the painting interesting

@sodaslut Replace "oils, watercolor and other different mediums" with foundation, concealer, beauty blenders and eye shadows. It's really just about your own personal perspective here. There's also a story behind someone's makeup no matter how bland you might find it personally. Maybe someone has an interview today and decided to go for the classic red lip to appear bold and confident, and to catch the interviewer's attention. Stories like that can very much be behind even everyday makeup.

Makeup artistry is an art.

However, the level of makeup you mention is not advanced enough to be art tbh.
Being able to contour, highlight, strobe, draw on eyebrows etc anyone can do on themselves with a little practice... the same way with practice anyone can draw a flower.

However, being able to do professional make-up (bridal, era, drag etc) where a lot of skill is required is an art, for example, Kandee Johnson on Youtube is an artist, her work is amazing. I've attached some examples:

Also even being able to do makeup you show in that picture is of a good standard, and no matter how basic or common it may be, makeup is a form of art and what is art is subjective from person to person, who am I, or you, to judge, or question another man's or woman's opinion?

Art is personal. It has nothing to do with what is similar to other`s work. I have seen many successful and quite famous artists who create very similar artistic wonders but use the same oil colors, same brushes, and nearly identical techniques. Art is work you have accomplished and created individually. In my opinion, if girls want to call their makeup for art, I am not in complete disagreement with them.

I do see your point, though. I don`t consider my makeup art because I`m simply not professional. Girls have to do what they love and feel comfortable in, because, society urges us to do otherwise.

I disagree, I'm an artist, as in painting. But I'm also a licensed MUA. I don't compare them in my head. It does take skill over time. How many vases have you seen a potters make over and over? How many tons of eye drawing have you seen? They are all very similar. Lots of humans look similar too. Girls with similar complexions, hair color and eye color most like will turn out looking the same. Most people have a unique makeup routine that they have developed all on their own. How many girls have you seen with the line that stops at her jawline? It takes time and effort. But after years of art classes, I know that uniqueness isn't always guaranteed in art. I understand your viewpoint but I disagree.

I disagree with you , I think that makeup is art. It can make an old wrinkly woman look years younger ,, it can make a 13 year old look 18 .
It can hide the actual black eye that your boyfriend gave you. It can make it look like your boyfriend gave you a black eye.
It can make a male look female and a female look male.

If this isn't art , I don't know what is. Women use makeup to express themselves, painters use paint and a canvas to express themselves. Sketchers use pencils and paper to express themselves

Someone who actually does make up well is recreating things they've seen and enhances them. Matching colours and styles together as well and Contouring is definitely an art because they're actually changing the look and shape of a face, that takes imagination.

Ofcourse it is art. Bcoz it consumes lot of time and practice and repeated failures. Personally I know lot of techniques but often I dnt apply it bcoz its so time consuming nd I dnt feel the need unless a special event. I prefer minimal base, nd dark eyeliner nd m ready to go.

Art is what people consider art, same with plants being a weed consept, if i consider it a weed you dont have to. If someone considers makeup to be art than you have no right to say they are wrong, you can dissagree but art is whatever we want it to be, acting is art music is art and makeup can be art if someone considers it to be art

There are tattoos that aren't meant to be noticeable like coverup tattoos for burn victims or tattooed eyebrows. If there's tattoos that aren't meant to be seen, there can be makeup that isn't super obvious. Her face is artistic. Can you do that cat eyeliner perfect like that? Because I know I can't.

Well to be fair not all art is unique. Their are lots of people who enjoy drawing anime and other types of art. Their work most of the time isn't unique. Almost all amateur artists aren't unique. I think make up is to some degree art. That being said, I rarely wear it, maybe once a month and sometimes not even that.

I would say to each their own - Some people use make up to be very expressive not in the mainstream sense but to make an individual creation, I love this type of stuff

My girl paints makeup so well that Vincent Van Gogh clawed his way out of his grave just so that he could cut off his other ear. She is a goddess and no, goddesses don't need to wear makeup (obviously) but if that's how she wants to express her artistic side then I'm all for it. Yeah I agree. Everyone uses the same technique there days. It's not art if you're just making a carbon copy of what everyone else is doing.

I would disagree. Have you not seen special effect makeup? Not just special effect but what people can do with eye shadow. Of course it can be argued that an everyday makeup look isn't art, but there is make up that is in fact art.

Yeah I kinda agree… I mean obviously it is used at the theatre, in drag, etc as art, but yeah I don't really think of it as expressing myself artistically. I just like attempting pretty eye makeup and to make myself look better 👍🏼
