why are we having "normal" and "plus" sized models? can we just have models that are all sizes? some outfits look better on skinny people and some look better on curvy people. can we just stop and have everyone be equal? people are always fighting over the races being equal or gays and straights. this can't be the same?

Tbh while I think the plus-size movement is a step sideways. It's good to see more body types included but STILL the healthy, average body type of the majority of women is not represented? What gives? The only campaign that I've seen that celebrates MULTIPLE body types is dove. Other brands? Follow suit please.

I don't want modeling ever to go back to the 90s when women literally died to be thin. I believe that we all should weigh the weight our bodies were supposed to be naturally. Some us are going to be a bit heavier than others. Now the but is coming. My concern is that people are carrying more weight than they should be carrying even if they are naturally meant to be a bit more curvy or in the case of men a bit more solid.

I do not believe in shaming others and being more heavy does not in any way make anyone less worthy of respect or less deserving of care and love. I just think that aging is hard enough without adding an unnecessary burden on one's body. Joint problems and a host of other things are just more difficult at 50, 60 and above with extra body weight.

I think it is good that these women can show their sexy sassy selves. I know I sound like I'm contradicting myself but this is sort of complicated isn't it.

Clothing sizes have become magical. I wear about the same size as I did when I was 18. It isn't that I didn't gain any weight it is just that they added more fabric and called it two sizes lower. I wear around a 5/6 at 118 and wore a 5 at 95lbs in the late 70s. That is about a 20 pound difference. What used to be plus size was the old size 14 which now is a 12.

I think that the reason models are thin is so that more emphasis is put on the clothing. Don't get me wrong - curvy people are pretty - but I think that the curves take attention away from the clothes. However, for modeling such as bath and body works, where the emphasis is put on the body, curvy models should be preferred because they visually have more going on and therefore bring emphasis to the message of "human body."

I have read that the camera 'adds weight' to a photograph. Hence the need for skinnier models.

At one point people are actually started to justify the shaming of smokers as a way to encourage them to stop smoking. This same tactic has caused fewer people to smoke over the years. People are now using that to justify their ignorant mistreatment of people that are already struggling with their weight.

I think as we notice an increase in fat shaming there is a counter move of fat acceptance pushing back. The fat acceptance movement has fired back by trying to convince people that fat is beautiful. That is why we are seeing these adds more often.

Throughout history people have used shame to control the freedoms of others. Fat shaming is no better than slut shaming. In fact in many ways fat shaming, and slut shaming are almost identical.

As such I don't see these ads as a good thing. It is my belief these ads are a response from the rising intolerance of fat people. It is one last rally cry until public policy decides to demonize anyone that is seen as being overweight.

People are just weeding out the unhealthy habits. And shaming smokers? Well, as a smoker myself I think other people have the right not to breathe in your smoke. Plain and simple.

And let's not forget that the government earns billions from smokers. Their campaigns to discourage it is a huge double-standard.

People should be free to do what they want with their own lives. Whether or not they are unhealthy habits or not plays no role in that. If you want to live in a free country then you need to be free to make bad decisions for yourself. Shaming someone for smoking, being fat, sleeping around, or any other life style choice is unacceptable.

I am not talking about banning smoke in public places so others don't have to breath in the smoke. I am talking about actually acting like smokers are lesser people for smoking. Besides with those new electronic cigarettes there is no smoke, and smokers are still not being allowed to use them in public places. Clearly breathing in the smoke isn't the reason behind banning the use of electronic cigarettes. These are anti freedom policies.

Oh I agree with you don't worry. I smoke analog and electric too but I don't really mind what other people think of it. Electronic smoke does produce smoke, it just not harmful to inhale but it can be irritating in a closed space. Here we can smoke in public no problem. You can't where you live?

I have always heard they didn't release any smoke. It must be a tiny amount if any is released that most people don't notice. Here if they aren't allowed to smoke regular cigarettes, then they aren't allowed to smoke the electronic ones either.

While I don't smoke, I just don't agree with how smokers are being treated. Smoking is commonly seen as a character flaw, much like how obesity is seen as a character flaw. I frequently even hear people making jokes about tobacco being a good thing, because it kills off the stupid people.

I think its good to see plus-sized models. To be honest, I think the whole skinny and tall thing is creepy looking. Like a tough wind can blow them over. I've met plenty of big and beautiful women, nothing wrong with that. But if the model is clearly borderline obese, then yes we gotta do a little thing with change. Otherwise, some people are born bigger than others and there's nothing wrong with that.

Skinny and tall is terrible. But so is being obese. And no, people aren't born bigger unless they have a rare genetic disease. It's all in the upbringing and a lack of self-control of the parents. Often feeding your child until it's fat means the child will be obese for life. A sad truth.

Actually from personal experience, you're very wrong. Example: My cousin. I know her family, cause we family, very well. She wasn't born as big as she is today. When we were kids, she was as skinny as me, if not worse. She just plumped up as she got older. Another one is really my moms side of the family, We have high metabolisms and then around 18-19 we gotta be beyond careful cause for some reason the weight really catches up and kicks us in the ass hard, especially the women.

Some people ARE born bigger, some aren't. Some have great parents and lack of self-control, others have terrible parents and great self-control. Some have good parents and self-control, but the lack of means to actually buy healthy food and stuff, like my mom and dad. We can't afford to eat healthy, so we hope for the best.

Just saying, its not always a truth to be born skinny, some people just aren't and that should be accepted. You can gain and lose weight easy, but you start out one way or the other.

I think it's good. I think they're put out there for women who hate their figure and for them to learn to love themselves.

Not all plus sized women can lose weight and many of them have this due to genetic reasons. It's so easy for people to say "Get healthy" when they're ignorant about what a lot of other people have to go through.

I would think that they should love themselves no matter what and that while being overweight IS NOT GOOD, if they're a bit on the heavy side, who cares?

Not really. Plus sized models are a temporary, laughable fad. They certainly aren't here to stay.

Plus, who want to see an "average" or "normal" American girl modelling? That doesn't make any sense. You wouldn't want Americans of average fitness being our athletes, or those of average intelligence and education being doctors. Models are supposed to represent the epitome of beauty, and plus-sized beauty is an oxymoron.

Let the butthurt women downvote me.

The "plus sized" models just seem like women of a healthy weight, I think it's a bit silly to use "plus sized" to describe any model who's not underweight.

I think "plus sized" quite vague as a term though, as it can mean anything from healthy/typical weight to morbidly obese (in the case of self labelled "plus sized" women.)

I think the "plus sized" models are an improvement in that they look more attractive and are actually healthy, but I don't think we should expect the people working in modelling to represent all cross-sections of society proportionally. You wouldn't expect short men to be equally represented in modelling, or men or women with unappealing facial features. Models are employed to look attractive (not that the super thins do) and show case clothing and so on, it doesn't make sense to expect unattractive people to be employed in such a vain way.

I never been into model type bodies.

But i thought the reason they're so skinny is generally because gay guys run the industry and the closer a girls body is to looking more boyish the more ideal they are

I dont wanna sound insensitive but really fat people kinda annoy me. Its a disservice to yourself to not be fit, you essentially lose a quality to your life. Its like having blurry vision when you could be experienceing clear crisp images. Not only that but it denotes a lack of discipline, it is actively potraying a character flaw. Finally being overweight is just unattractive. Do yourself a favor if your overweight just put in the work to get into shape.

Depending on the survey/study/article one reads, the average size of women in the United Syayes is either 14 or 16.

If someone is buying a dress, for example, they know (I would hope) that it will NOT look the same on a pretzel-stick-thin model as on themselves. As the average age of the country increases, so do the clothing sizes. In the meantime, Photoshop artists continue to make passable photos look like great photos.

It's economics, people. We can "accept" heavy-set folk all we want, but that doesn't make them any healthier in the long run. When people learn that most of their backaches are due to 1. a weak core and 2. overworked chest muscles, maybe they will have an incentive to get out and get some exercise, becasue without the exerice, their bodies will continue down that long slippery slope.

"Average" in north america is moderately obese.

Plus size, as illustrated here, looks fine to me. But obese is still ugly.

The fat acceptance movement, and maybe to a lesser extent the plus size movement, has a cancerous beauty standard. Because on the one hand, it says "being fat doesn't mean you're ugly, but to be beautiful, you need to buy all our makeup products." It's just a gimmick that makeup companies are using to siphon money away from the wileight loss industry toward themselves

You don't need do be a barbie doll to be attractive.

You do need to be in a healthy range of body fat percentage though.

It's just another unhealthy trend and I certainly don't support it. It's for women who would rather stick with their increased risk of heart disease than shed some pounds.
There is nothing wrong with body confidence, and the fact that these women are confident in their bodies isn't the problem. It's more the promotion of that type of body (in the same way to stick thin) it's not healthy.
The pendulum just swung from one extreme to the other 😒

I think it's great that they're shining light on "plus-size women" because the media often only shows "underweight" models so many people think they have to be skinny and start bad habits. When the media shows bigger people too, it let's people know that they don't have to be a size 0. Most plus size models are just average size women considered plus size for not being a zero so I'm all for it

To be honeSt none of those women would consider *plus size* they are average weight women!! Plus size is heavier women that's what I would consider so the fashion industry is still getting it wrong. Plus size would be the likes of Adele and Melissa McCarthy and they did plus size models before in the shape of Sophie Dahl and she was quick to disappear of the map. So it is kind of patronising that the best they've got is average weight women.
