Why do people wear socks?

Anonymous
This question can sound strange but let me explain.
I live in Florida and have never worn socks in my life. I've mostly worn flip-flops and sandals. For the few cold months I wear closed shoes without socks. My parents actually never made me wear socks and I got used to it.
Two years ago, I moved in New York for studying in college. It was necessary for me to wear closed shoes most of the year because of the temperature. I naturally put them barefoot because buying some socks never crossed my mind.
The thing is that my friends here in NY find this disgusting. I don't understand because I've never worn a single sock in my life (I don't even know how it feels to wear some). For two years, summer excepted, I've worn sneakers and boots everydays, even practised sport without socks and never had issues like smelly feet, blisters or cold feet.

It's why I'm asking why most people wear them. It's like a useless thing social norms made normal.
