We're all in a way, animals. Instinctively, the "mating dance" is all about appeal, which lead to sex, which lead to social security.

Hence in a general sense, our desire to become attractive has a lot to do with our survival in society, which include food, lodging, and sex.

Now think of it another way. Society no longer care about appeal. We no more need to fit in. We become loners. If this state were to happen, long before we want sex, we already die of hunger or from the lack of shelter.

Yes and no. There's a little bit more to it than that. Trying to look your best and appearing to be an attractive, fit, and suitable mate is also part of our animal instincts. We have been doing it for a million years. Same thing with being obsessed with sex. It guarantees the survival of our species. That's why so many women are obsessed with finding some tall big strong fit looking guy. Her instincts tell her he will be the best candidate to protect her from the other cavemen.
