Why does the phrase "ignorance is bliss" upset some people?

I have the word 'ignorance' tattooed on my wrist and the other day this guy complimented me on it but asked what it read (its facing me, he couldn't read it upside down) but when I told him what it said he got upset.

Ignorance can be used in different contexts, mine being that what you don't know, can't hurt you.

other people see it as you'd rather be stupid. why is this?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, so please don't get offended and try and tell me "ignorance is not good, you shouldn't live that way, blah blah blah" I've heard it all before.

I just want to know why it offends or upsets some people.

First of all, I just need to say that you got that tattooed on your self because it MEANS something to you...so yes, everyone has their own opinion (isn't that why we're on this site? lol), but screw anyone who throws negativity towards you because of what YOU chose to put on YOUR skin :).

Basically I think it offends people because yes, it does have I'm sure many different meanings to a lot of people. "Ignorance Is Bliss" would be a crappy situation where someone is being cheated on. For example, girl gets cheated on, boyfriend brings an STD home because of his escapades, and because girlfriend doesn't know that she even has to worry about things, she has unprotected sex with him and BOOM, STD. So not blissful.

That's just one example (which unfortunately I know a couple people who have been through that). Basically, if someone takes offense, it's probably because they were in a situation where they were kept in the dark and then were blindsided and got screwed over.

Thats not really a good example of ignorance. people get cheated on all the time and they don't kno about it, does that make them ignorant? you can't control something like that, if it happens they can't do anything about wuts already been done, they could never know ahead of time.

Because when someone is ignorant they can hurt someone else because they didn't know any better. Like someone who is racist can be said to be ignorant. It depends on the context you use it. So, if that's not how you use it, then don't worry about it. Or, get the tattoo removed.

Just like anything in this world there are people who agree and disagree about the same thing for no apparent reason.

I think ignorance is bliss, is a really truthful statement. Imagine if you had no knowledge of the poverty, famine, drought, and disease happening in places such as Africa. Imagine if, to you, it was a crime free world because you knew no more.

It works in adverse too, if you don't know of the good things in this world such as 'love' (for lack of a better example) then your world would be slightly less bright.

The crime free part is a little far in example

and if you didn't know love, it actually wouldn't be less bright because technically you wouldn't know any difference

You would lack the knowlage without knowing you lacked it so yes, technically, you would not notice the difference as you can't compare the two, however just because you have no knowlage on what you're missing out on, doesn't mean that you are not missing out.

so your life would be less bright if you compare two seperate realities, one that knows love, one that doesnt. in practice this is impossible to use as an example but it works in theory

I think he was just flirting with you. If you recall your childhood days in the sandbox, boys would pick on and push the girls that they liked. It was their way of flirting back then, but guys never really grow up, they just get older.
