Fishing for compliments. Definition please?

Well I've never been specifically accused of compliment fishing, but then again people on good enough terms for potential compliments probably wouldn't accuse someone of fishing to his/her face right?

Sometimes I do say some very conceited things. One guy (I liked and he didn't like me) blatantly called me arrogant, told me to get off my pedestal, and was glad I was shy. (Ouch buddy!) On the flip side, I also have been known to act ultra humble, and several guys I knew commented (both to my face and to other people) that I was "very modest". Haha my ego issues must be bipolar?!

Anyway: I was wondering what fishing for compliments actually is... Guys opinions will probably be most useful I would imagine. Can you give me some examples, and does it really annoy you that much?

To me and my girlfriends, throwing compliments around is just good manners, as is flirting. Gracefully acknowledging compliments, while denying their truth (whether true or not) is another aspect of manners. Not to make any assumptions, but it doesn't seem like most guys think/care all that much or see it that way...making their compliments more genuine often, and thus fishing I guess could become a temptation for some people? Is it possible to be fishing for compliments by accident?

On the same topic, does it annoy guys when girls compliment them a lot? I mean yes I know theoretically, everyone likes compliments, but if a girl is continually optimistic in her comments, perhaps a little over-generous, is it flattering or just annoying and come across as phony?
