In your case, however, a guy simply doesn't know how to approach/bond with girls, therefore he assumes that *perhaps* he should use similar tactics, but also understands girls are much more fragile, thus typical approach won't work, therefore the confusion as to what he should do. That's why, for example, young boys grab girls' hair so often.
I might lightly punch girls on the arm during some banter. However, I only see myself doing it to girls I’m somewhat into. So yeah, maybe this guy likes you, just the fact he’s making some physical contact

If it’s a playful light fake punch on the arm, and he stops at that. If it’s some fake punch in the face, he sees you as “one has f the guys” or he’s a kid sycho. If he’s lightheartedly being playful in a safe environment like school or the library, he is likely a sweet guy.
Guys are straight forward people who don't play any games or give hidden messages... We do things upfront... if we do something we means it... So if he punches you... It just means he likes the feel of physically hurting you.. no secret "I love you" message... If he wanted to get that message across to you he would just say it
