It is in our genes. Innocence is a component of femininity. Femininity and masculinity are opposites. That's why women tend to be attracted to so called "bad boys" (the opposite of innocent) and men are attracted to good (innocent) women.

Men are the protector of women, they are dominant, they connect physically. An innocent woman is more desirable from all of these standpoints.
Strong and independent is all fine and good 'till it gets to "We don't need no stinkin' men." Then all bets are off. The more a woman tries to be like a man the less desirable she is to them.
Women are attracted to the dragon slayers, not the girlie-man or nancy-boy.
