Do compliments always have to be about appearance?

It's more flattering when someone compliments me about my character. I appreciate when someone told me pretty but it feels different when someone compliment about my character or someone will say " I'm glad you exist " or anything that is not about appearance 😅

No- but appearance is the first thing people notice, and can be detected much faster and easier than deeper stuff. As a result, it's what people notice soonest, and that sticks around, even after other things become apparent; it's not like someone stops seeing how good your hair looks when they learn you're an excellent juggler.

Most my friends are long distance so I end up liking them and complimenting them before I even know what they look like since often they use not a picture of themselves on their profile. So of course.

Nope compliments can be about many different things. Appearance only being one of them. Your character, your work ethic, fashion etc

No. Compliments that do not involve appearance go a long way, especially before dating. Otherwise, you just come off as a simp. I never compliment a woman's appearance until we're starting to get serious.

It gets easier to compliment more than appearance when they learn more about you. A complete stranger for example has literally nothing else to work with.
