As a result, it's what people notice soonest, and that sticks around, even after other things become apparent; it's not like someone stops seeing how good your hair looks when they learn you're an excellent juggler.

No. Compliments that do not involve appearance go a long way, especially before dating. Otherwise, you just come off as a simp. I never compliment a woman's appearance until we're starting to get serious.
Not at all. I compliment on their personality, how kind, funny, lovely as a person they are.
It gets easier to compliment more than appearance when they learn more about you. A complete stranger for example has literally nothing else to work with.
