Why would a guy call a girl bae if they are not dating?

He has no girlfriend so I'm wondering why he would call me bae. He was saying good morning to my coworker in a different language and when he turned to greet me he said bae and then he said my name. I was like what did u say I was kinda shocked like I know what I heard, but couldn't believe it and that's when I started to laugh. And that's when he walked back and said he's going to start speaking to me in Arabic and my friend in English. It didn't make sense because the way you say good morning in Arabic doesn't sound like what he said to her.

I did have a few of strange interactions with him. 1. The gaze- it happened once only because I choose not to make eye contact with him.

2. He sounds nervous when talking to me. I've worked with him for a year and I don't recall him ever speaking to me with such nervousness. And plus he expressed to me how how much of a confident he is in the beginning.

It's more to the story but I don't want to write anymore because it's just too much.

Do they actually share a common interest or hobby? Or... is it a girl that likes the attention (what she'll try to describe and friendship), and a guy that has his sub-level crush going on and is trying to break out of the friend zone?

Why call you "bae"? isn't that a flirting tactic to hint at something like that? Just saying. Oh, he's getting more nervous and stuff now that things are moving further away from the common interest (the job)? I wonder why that is?
