Why do I want a girlfriend so bad?

For the past year or so I've been thinking about this girl going crazy about her but she doesn't like me so I'm just going to give up since she will never be my girlfriend. But for some reason, when I see a girl I've met for the first time, if we hit it off then I want to ask her out, and this is happening even with girls I've been friends with for years but had no intention of asking out.

I'm 17 and next year I will hopefully be in uni, so I would have to leave a girlfriend anyway, and I don't want to think about girls really because I just want to concentrate on my studies this year, but I can't. Girls confuse the hell out of me!
