We were so close, but now he's so distant and I don't know what it means

Last quarter I got really close to a guy. We were like friends who were on the path to being more. At least it felt like it. I read all the signs and it seemed like he was interested in me and I sure was interested in him. We spent a lot of time talking and hanging around each other and even set it up so we had a class together this quarter. But as soon as this quarter started we began talking less and less. We see each other everyday during class but we don't seem to say more than the surface stuff. He's been getting really distant and not responding to some of my messages. Sometimes it seems like he's trying to get me jealous or something, sometimes its just like he's ignoring me. Is he playing hard to get (do guys do that? ) or is he not interested anymore, even just as friends?

I personally don't know of any guys that play hard to get. It might happen, but I don't know of anyone like that. Maybe he was just frightened by how close you were getting? He might be a little scared by the speed of it too. Fortunately, I also don't know of guys trying to make a girl jealous. Might happen, but I've never seen it.

Have you just tried being honest and upfront with him about your feelings for him? Don't jump the poor bloke and cling onto him for dear life, but go somewhere that you can just chat. Speak slowly and calmly. He'll pick up on your nervousness, so remember to breathe. Act like it's the most natural thing in the world.

The best that can happen is that you get a new boyfriend. The worst that can happen is that you act the same that you seem to be doing now (distant) if he says no. Usually, at least as far as with the guys I know, they will listen and think reasonably about it.

That's of course also not taking into account that the chances are that the reason that he's acting like this around you is because he feels something the same way. At least I'm fairly sure that if he ever was a friend (again, from what you've said, a given) then he won't be doing any of this to hurt you. I bet he's not even aware that you feel the same way about him as what I say he probably does about you.

He may be uninterested now, and doesn't want to bother to tell you why. It is common. It could have been something small and totally irrelevant. If you've seen any episode of Seinfeld then you know what I'm talking about.

Did you ever date each other or do social functions outside of the class environment?
