How can you tell whether a compliment is genuine or not?

As girls would agree, girls get a lot of compliments from guys, even average-looking girls. A friend complimented me and when I seem to not believe he was sincere, we ended up discussing why I always seem to doubt his compliments. I said that it's because it just seems so easy for guys to compliment girls on her looks. It just isn't possible that all compliments you get are genuine. Some guys would say anything to get into a girl's pants.

If you get compliments from the opposite sex on your looks, how do you determine whether they are genuine compliments or plain bullshit? Does it bother you if it turns out to be just bullshit? Are you the kind of person who can take compliments easily?

I will compliment a girl to get her to like me, but my aim for her liking me is just that. Not to get into her pants.

And well, to know whether a compliment is genuine or not, you have to know the person. Or depend on your first impression of him. Limited knowledge about a person = limited ability to determine his bulls*** level.

If he is really not meaning it, it'd only bother me if I find his intention distasteful. I mean, if my friend says I'm getting good at cooking, even when I'm obviously still cooking up charred plates of horridness, I'd appreciate the thought.

When I compliment girls, I mean what I say to them. Now I have complimented this girl on my Facebook about how she looks and her photos were brilliant. But I took them off because I didn't she deserve my compliments, because I think was playing me for a mug. teasing me. I just don't think was being genuine to me.

I was not complimenting her, just to get into her pants. I don't expect anything in return from a girl.

I usually don't take compliments well because I don't look good often. If I look really bad and receive a compliment I know it's bullshit. I judge on my appearance and the character of the person. It bothers me if the person was lying.

I think it's disrespectful to not assume it's genuine. You can be careful not to see too much into it, but unless you know it's not genuine, you should appreciate the gesture at the very least.
