Why everyone should learn how to cook

Learning how to cook seems to be less important in today’s world. 50% of millennials know how to roast a chicken(porch.com) compared to 66% for generation X and 79% for baby boomers. I believe most people would rather go out and buy a roasted chicken, which can sometimes be cheaper than making it yourself. But I personally do not like to do that, I like to cook it my own way with my personal seasonings. Like lemon pepper, salt mirepoix, and a bit of wine. And cooking can be exciting, I personally find it extremely exciting. There is something about the aromas that, and overall process, taste of the food, that captures so many different emotions. Which is why I encourage others to do more cooking at home, and as an aspiring chef, I also encourage people to make their own recipes to fit your personal taste. There are so many reasons why a person should learn how to cook.

Based on an article by buisnessinsider.com, that referenced the bureau of labor statistics; millennials spend on average $3416 a year on average eating food away from home. That is a large chunk of a persons earning, depending on what tax bracket you are in. Some meals can cost anywhere from 20-30$ depending where you go. But you can make a lasagna that feeds a family for that price. If you can learn simple dishes to cook at home, you can save hundreds of dollars a week alone. I believe most people choose to eat at restaurants because they believe the food will be much better. And in some cases, that is true.

I have worked in some places where the chef had worked everywhere and had a great understanding of food. People would eat at his restaurant because it had great reputation, but he rarely cooked the food himself. In a kitchen, the line cook makes the food during service, and the chef directs and runs the kitchen. Which goes to show you do not need to be a great chef to make great food. You only need to be able follow a recipe and understand basic cooking techniques. “Anybody can cook” (ratatouille) in reference to one of my favorite movies Ratatouille.

Another benefit of cooking at home is, you can make it the way you like it. You would be surprised what you could create when you put your favorite ingredients together. As an example , one of America’s favorite desserts was created when a ice cream vendor ran out of dishes, and the booth next to him which happened to be a pastry stand, offered to help by rolling waffles into a cone shape to hold the ice cream (IDFA). And the Ice cream cone was invented. Home cooking is exactly that, you put ingredients you enjoy together and see how it works. Its fun and creative and when it works, incredibly rewarding. Home cooking is a skill that could either impress your friends, with unique ideas, or create a new world sensation.

I believe in cooking from home more often because of the money a person can save, the enjoyment that can come from learning something new, and the creativity that cooking allows. Now some of you might be thinking why an aspiring chef is recommending people to spend less money restaurants? Considering that is how chefs make their living. I recommend cooking at home because I genuinely enjoy cooking and not because I believe I will be become rich doing it. I want to end my speech with a quote from Ratatouille, that I think holds a lot meaning, and can relate to just about anyone. “You must be imaginative, strong-hearted. You must try things that may not work, and you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Your only limit is your soul. What I say is true—anyone can cook... but only the fearless can be great.”
