What meal did you prepare that received a lot of compliments and good feedback? For me one of them is Cajun garlic butter shrimp and sautéed green beans over rice.

I had to cook for me and my younger brother quite often because my parents traveled a lot and I learned some tricks while watching cooking shows in German TV and Tim Mälzer explained basics very well in his shows. I can make good quality bird and beef broths, au jus, roux and basics any cooking trainee in first years should know but I'm surely not a pro cook.

However, my husband far surpasses me with both his truly amazing adventurous, and experimentative culinary skills.

Well at least I do know where my husband got most, if not all his skills and knowledge from, and that will be his Mother, who is just the most brilliant and superb cook ever... Her roast dinners are quite simply to die for.
+1 yI'm like an idiot savant. I can recreate my wife's favorite restaurant dish on her birthday because I think I can sort of tell what ingredients people put into a dish by just tasting it. But I also can't bake worth a damn because then I have to follow instructions, and I find that so boring.

As for my thing, my wife got so depressed during COVID pandemic years since her fave Indian restaurant shut down. So then I tried to take her to other Indian restaurants in our area and I liked all of them but she's very picky with her butter chicken. She loved that original restaurant so much.
So I know my wife is a ginger addict and she has somewhat sweeter tooth than me, and I remembered from tasting her dish at that restaurant roughly what it taste like. So her birthday was coming close and so I made multiple small batches of butter chicken; taste and tweak, taste and tweak. And I got it near perfect, at least I think so, after so many tries. - +1 y
I'm a total winger type and that reflects even in my work. I do my best work when I sort of wing something but I know what "taste" I'm aiming for. I am the worst at following instructions because I never feel like I learn anything following them. They're imprecise, anyway, like if someone says to add two TBSP of salt, what does that mean? Different brands of salt are more dense/salty than others. So I feel like I need to know what taste I am aiming for and only use recipe loosely this way to get even the result the author might have had, or at least what I was aiming for.

+1 yI'm an excellent cook. Being a guy, I can cook anything. I refuse to cook without spices though. (Hey, I like my food to have flavor). I have my own recipe cards and a spice rack. Adding spices makes a difference when cooking.
I was in foster care too. My parents didn't really take care of me, so I was always cooking for myself. Since I was little.

+1 yEveryone always asks for my Kansas City slow smoked ribs that I do on my Big Green Egg. Either that or I'll make my smoked ribs with Carolina BBQ sauce and rub. They also like my grilled rice cakes with caramelized peanut satay sauce and green onion.
I also recently made stuffed Walleye with bread stuffing, asparagus, baby leaf spinach, swiss cheese and cranberry sauce. That went over well with some friends.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yGood is an understatement. I am exceptional in this and really proud as I have spent a lot of time learning, reading, and cooking. I know recipes from different European countries, Indian, Asian, Chinese, and Mayan and even the locals have no clue anymore. I have directly translated them from Latin, Sanskrit, and Chinese. However, it's still a hobby for me.
