Who remembers beer & soda returnable bottles? Why did they stop this recycling method?

Drinks tasted better in glass then in plastic

Returned the bottles and the store gave you money back for returning the empty bottles.

I remember going though empty lots, finding old bottles, washing out the dirt clogs out of them and returning them to the store. So I could use the money to buy candy.

One time when I was a kid. Me and my sister helped the neighbors clean out their basement and they let me and my sister keep all the bottles we found.

We felt rich, bottles were like finding gold to us kids back in the day.

Yes, me and my friends were known as the dump gang because we used tobgo to the town dump to look for treasures. We used to look for old bottles and would bring a wagon and fill it up with old deposit bottles. The regular size ones were 2 cents and the quart ones ere a nickel. We would take them to the little variety store that was owned by a cranky old guy. Once he asked us why the bottles were so dirty and did we just pick them up at the dump We told him no, we would not do that to him.

We still return our beer, wine & liquor bottles and containers for the deposit.

@humanearth Ontario, Canada we get $0.10 back for beer cans or beer bottles so if I take a 30 pack of beer empties back I get $3.00 back, for any liquor or wine bottle or container 750 ml or larger we get back $0.20 each it doesn't take to long to sccumulate 10 which I'll get $2.00 back for, everything is taken back to our beer stores for recycling.

@humanearth No we can only buy beer at ghe beer store bug we take back not only beer but wine snd liquor containers to and it doesn't matter what beer store we take the empties back too.

I remember and I agree that soda tasted a lot better in glass. I suspect some of the ingredients have changed over the years.

I don't know why they stopped using glass only to use plastic. It seems to me that glass would be a lot better for the environment than all that plastic not to mention how toxic the chemicals in the plastic are for our consumption.

Now that I think about it... Why is beer still sold in glass bottles instead of plastic bottles?

Well in aluminum cans. The aluminum is toxic, so they have to spray the inside with a plastic coating. Did you know that?

Some beer is sold in plastic bottles to. Mainly so people don't use them as weapons at concerts and sporting events

Nope, I didn'tknow that about the aluminium cans. I've only seen beer in cups at concerts and sporting events.

Yeah, acids from beer and soda eats the aluminum and turns the drink into posion

Its was because aluminum is a lot cheaper metal and a lot cheaper to manufacturer

That is a bit before my time, however at family gettogethers I listen to my older brothers talking about the this as well. One addition was about a milk brand where you kept the bottle caps and once a year a movie theater would have a morning show where the caps got you in for cartoons, movie and then would have raffles of things like balls, bikes etc where you would use your caps as cash. Sounds like fun times.

That’s before my time but I will agree, anything from a glass container tastes better than something in plastic. Glass is heavier and more fragile to transport and plastic is cheaper. It’s always about economics. Glass would more environmentally friendly though.

I do and they still have it in some places because I do buy soda in glass bottles from the Mexican Coca-Cola

That’s strange because you can usually return it to where you bought it and they have to give you the deposit because they took it from you when you bought it

The only state I know of that pays for returning bottles (and it's not back at the store) is Maine

I think Maine pays 10 cents also, we can return them at the beer distributors here in New York and machines at the supermarkets

Too much hassle for the companies. They rather dumb the plastic in the ocean, cheaper and easier.

Its still a thing for beer bottles in germany.
