Why the heck do Americans eat sweet potato casserole with Thanksgiving dinner?

Sweet potato casserole is like this dessert thing made from sweet potato and marshmallows. So you'd think it's eaten as a dessert.

But no its eaten alongside turkey, stuffing and other savoury things. It's so weird. It's like eating cake on a pizza.

I don't really care for the mashed up ones with marshmallow baked on top.
My wife cuts baked sweet potatoes into discs and then bakes them in a casserole pan with butter and brown sugar that sort of caramelizes on them.

Anyway, there are the savory things, but it's nice to take the occasional bite of contrasting sweetness like sweet potatoes or sweet-tart cranberry sauce or a buttery roll with honey. All those contrasting flavors make the other flavors taste more delicious and satisfying.

My mom uses brown sugar and pecans instead of marshmallows, it's much better. I only do marshmallows with a baked sweet potato when we go out to eat. But Thanksgiving would be disappointing without it.
