Well, like I said, he could get up and not have any beer for several hours. My brother would get up and head straight for the beer tap!
Also, dad never drank anything harder than beer. I think he might have a glass or two of wine with dinner about 4 or 6 times a year. My brother drank all sorts of harder stuff.
Dad also knew when to quit for the night and, if we were out somewhere, he'd refuse to drive home.

We used to have a close family friend that drank almost constantly. Not just beer, the hard stuff. He died one afternoon while taking a bath. His liver gave out on him and he bled to death in the tub. He was in his 30's or 40's THAT'S an alcoholic!
My aunt & uncle drank beer almost all day, every day! They couldn't get behind the wheel of a car without a beer in their hands! THEY were alcoholics! And she was a cop!!
I have a cousin that does the same thing. Another of my uncles died 5 years ago and this guy shows up at the funeral shitfaced in the early afternoon!! He brought an equally drunk friend with him who fell asleep on a couch in the funeral home and then pissed on the couch in his sleep!! THEY are alcoholics!

I took out the back seat of my car and put a big Coleman cooler back there. I always had beer in it. I connected a plastic tube to the water drain and put it through a hole in the floor. I kept if filled with ice from the Holiday Inn ot else there was always myself a big pile of shaved ice from the zambini at the local ice skating rink

No, this was just casual drinking almost daily.
Between 1 and 3 in the afternoon (noon to about 4:00) and between 3 and 5 in the evening (8:00 to midnight or so).

But, he never gets drunk, at least not `til just before he goes to bed. He's not into getting shitfaced, like my brother.
He'd get up around 9, have a cup of coffee and read the paper, take a shit then take a 20 mile walk up river, eat lunch (with 1, maybe 2 beers, ride a bus back home or ride the bus up and walk back, take a nap, jump in the pool for a while and have beer or two while sitting in the sun or playing cards, eat dinner (with coffee, unless we were cooking on the grill), take another nap or play cards or do the puzzle listening to music (big band stuff), get a beer and start watching t. v. around 8 or 9 and have 3 or 4 more beers before going to bed around midnight.
My brother, on the other hand, would wake up around 9 or 10, head straight for the beer tap and attempt to suck it dry for the rest of the day while lording over the t. v. all fucking day watching Clint Eastwood movies or the weather channel with the sound off `til he fell asleep in the chair, or face down on the floor, beer in hand, about 3 or 4 a. m..
If it was just dad drinking, it'd take him over a week to kill a quarter barrel. with my brother helping, they could kill a half barrel in about 5 or 6 days!

I can barely skip a day without root beer but, if that was booze, it wouldn't make me an alcoholic, it just means I love my root beer. I used to kill at least a 2 liter bottle every day. These days, I'm down to one or two glasses a day.
Dad loved his beer but I'm pretty sure he could go without for several days. My brother was dry for several years but, he was in jail, at the time. Otherwise, everything revolves around beer! He collected beer cans, beer signs, beer trays, beer tap handles, beer coasters, etc..
