Pre-covid, most people in the US understood tipping to mean, one should give tips to their waiter, someone who does personal care like a hair stylist, the delivery person, or someone who does a service job that goes above and beyond.
During Covid, because things like hotels and restaurants were closed, a lot of people became far more generous with their tipping because they were really supporting people who needed it because there was no in person business and few personal services due to risk of exposure.
Now that some time has passed and many of these businesses that survived are well on their way back to normalcy if they haven't reached it already, the BUSINESS of tipping has increased 5 fold. Restaurants now ask for tips when you pick up the food yourself and don't eat in, coffee shops want you to tip when you just got a coffee and a bagel, companies are asking for tips just for you showing up and sitting for 5 minutes.
Really? Has tipping gotten out of control? What are you willing to tip for?
