Can't people do a job without expecting a TIP? I mean expecting a $1 tip for just handing someone an ice cream cone? Or maybe they need a job that pays a decent hourly wage so they don't need to live on TIPS. If they want tips that bad then play your jews harp on a corner with a can on the ground and win them over with your talent.
The tipping thing is kind of weird, but I don't make a big deal out of it. I don't know how it got started.
Tippers are the ones who started the trend, not the employee. After a while it became tradition and expected. Eventually it became a legal thing, with lower minimum wage for traditional tipping jobs, with the tips expected to make up the difference. The employees are still required to make minimum wage - it's just a combination of hourly plus tips.
Tipping has gotten out of control in my opinion. Restaurant servers have been tipped my entire life. But 10% was the typical tip when I was young. Then it increased to 15%. Then to 20%. Now a lot of people tip 25-30% or more.
Plus a lot of jobs that were not tipping jobs in the past expect a tip now. Some things that are fairly expensive expect a tip. My friend has a hair salon. She charges $40 for a basic hair cut. She expects and normally gets a 20% tip, making the hair cut $50, which is ridiculous. There is no way in hell I'd tip for a $40 hair cut. I'll tip for a $12 hair cut, but not a $40 cut.
I rarely leave a tip in those jars at coffee shops, etc. Those guys are getting paid a normal wage. My friend owns a coffee shop. He says his employees make $20-25 per hour on top of their regular wage.
Servers at a restaurant can make a very good living through tips, especially if they only work the busy hours. There is no reason for expected tips to get higher and higher. It's gotten out of control, and it's the CUSTOMERS who are doing it, not the employees. I've even seen it on this site when someone asks what a tip should be. It amazes me how many people recommend a tip of 30%. THEY are the ones creating the expectation, not the employees.
It's completely absurd for a job that should be minimum wage to pay as much as an engineer, programmer or scientist - or double the pay of a very hard working skilled trades person.

It's just a state of the times. Why does the gov't rely so much on lottery to raise funds? Because everybody wants the quick fix and it passes people off less than just raising taxes.
My sister was a server for a few years. And I remember her telling me about a verbal exchange between her and her boss about her wage. And her bosses response was "You don't understand how hard it is to have to pay someone minimum wage". Her boss was saying it was unfair because so many workers don't deserve that.😆
But looking at it from an employers point of view in say a restaurant you have 3 main expenses the operating expenses such as rent or lease of the business, the product you sell, and the payroll. Well there really isn't much you can do about rent. But the other two can be manipulated. Now you can raise prices or you can reduce portions. And since people don't typically want to pay ore especially in rough economic times. Businesses typically opt to shrink the portions. But in times such as after a pandemic the may be forced to do both to stay afloat.
So prompting increased tipping allows those with the means to give more while just guiltily the rest.😆 the end result is this becomes part of the norm when other companies start to copycat it.
For a person who comes from a country where tipping isn't part of our culture, I think it's absurd when I hear people from the USA speak about it. To me, tipping is a form of appreciation for good services. I don't just go around handing people money just cause they think they deserve it. What would you do if that was the only money that I had, for my meal only!!! You'll only be nice to a person if they add in some extra cash. Or you'll be nasty and still expect me to tip you. I am not that kind of person regardless of whether that's how they earn; from tips. Sort yourself with your boss. It's not my duty to pay double.
From what I hear about the states many employers donāt pay a livable wage. Minimum wage in the states is also abysmal compared to where I am. So it forces service industry workers to rely on tip. We do have tipping here where I am too, but itās optional. I will admit though itās getting out of control in the last decade itās gone from 10-15-20% to 15-18-20% and now itās 18-20-25% cost of living is going up but most have to focus on their own bills and canāt make ends meet with tipping getting as extreme as it is

They shouldāve chosen/applied to a job that didnāt require them to live off tips
Anywhere else besides the US you have service personal that gets paid a decent wage and tips are only a bonus and in countries even forbidden or not accepted.
You have to ask American restaurant owners why they underpay their workers and expect customers to pay half of the wage.We actually largely consider tipping rude in my culture (Japan). Taxi drivers and prostitutes might accept but it is largely considered in very poor manner to tip.
I think this is a good way. It prevents business owners from underpaying their employees and acting like beggars for tips. A working person's livelihood shouldn't depend on charity.
I mean we live in a free market with some government intervention.
People are just trying to make their own way through this life. And you act like it's their fault that one of the few options they had at the time, was a job that pays tips.
Maybe they have a talent for being a waitress or whatever?
Why are you shitting on them for doing what it takes to maintain their life and their existence on this planet?
You sound economically ignorant like a communist but also morally abhorrent like a conservative.Or you could just not be such a cheapskate bastard and try to make somebody's day better. In many states restaurants are allowed to pay waitresses less than minimum wage because the state expects them to get tips. Young people working their first job have to pretty much take whatever job they can get, the same goes with stupid people. Have you ever been in this position or did you just live off of other people's money your whole life? Or live off mommy and daddy's money until after you graduated college? You should happy they are trying to work instead of just living off bum handouts from the state and sucking up tax dollars, you old skinflint.
You seem like a Boomer, so let me inform you that wages haven't increased with inflation.
Don't want to feel pressured to tip? Retire to a country where people are paid a living wage.Tipping was originally not a bad idea, that has morphed into being a monstrous bastardization of its original intent.
All it would take to get rid of tipping is for an establishment to slightly raise their prices to the customer, and pay their employees a fair wage.
Before you know it, there would no longer be any tipping.
Who's going to take the first step?
Probably no one.I donāt have a problem with it. I always try to tip. Many jobs pay menial wages. Therefore, I like to help when/where I can. Itās not my place to judge them because I donāt know them or their situation. Perhaps they are looking for higher paying jobs, but nothing opens up to them. Depending on where you are in the world, itās hard finding employment, especially ones that pay their employees well. Therefore, people take what that they can get.
Im glad its not really a big thing in the UK. There are decent minimum hourly wages here. Delivery drivers make. more than most fresh graduates and that is without tips. They probs get minimal tips anyways. Tipping here is a bit more common in fine dining restaurants. I don't tip in general unless i am back home in South Asia where i know the wages are so low that its literally exploitation of labour. In some restaurants here in the UK, they add a discretionary 10-15% gratuity, i often tell them to please take it away from my bill.
Why are you blaming employees? It's employers who are at fault and the government. Do you know that there's a different minimum wage for tipped staff? It's $2.13 per hour. So if you don't tip they don't make rent. If they have a bad spell, they can't afford groceries.
Don't blame the people working blame the system. It's fucked. Tipping shouldn't be a persons wage it should be a little extra on top.
I feel like tipping should not be enforced on you, that's how it is in my country. It should be something you willingly give out
In China, Iāve tried giving tips and they donāt accept. Even if you insist giving it to them, they usually never accept. I like that.
The other day elderly courier delivered my meal, I gave her a tip 10 times bigger than my meal was worth. Because she was older, she already probably struggles with health and life and still she works and provides for herself and her grandchildren. I found that admirable.
Tell me you haven't worked crappy jobs in your life without telling me.
Just don't tip and move on🤷🏽āāļø, it ain't that serious. Meanwhile people that work in those industries tend to rely on those tips. The same way you relying on whoever is taking care of your entitled self. Good luck to that person. It's basically as American thing of "my job and brand of democracy are shit, and two faced. But lets disguise that with this culture of paying over paying."
Private businesses take and take, while relying on socialist ideals in their customers to give and give.
This is why Americans are a disastrous experiment.
Average rent right now in the US $1,702 as 30% should be spent on rent, someone needs to earn $5,674 just to make it. That's $35.00+ an hour! Now average wage in the US is $19.35 for young earners for older earners it's $34.75. Is it any wonder they are asking for a bit more help? And it's an ask, not a demand! They have a job, they are doing a service and they are simply asking...
Walmart. com, has where you can order food online either using your Debit card or EBT card, they have a monthly membership which I got it's $13.73 a month this way I can get my groceries delivered to me free well, not complaining, but they still offer customers to tip the driver who delivers my groceries to my door mind my transportation is limited I have no vehicle in the family, but I agree these places offering tips is crazy.
I know I agree. Everyone expects a tip these days. Sandwich shops and coffee shops often have tip options. Itās ridiculous. Iām sorry, youāre supposed to be tipped for doing your job? If you drive something out to me with your vehicle, or wait on my table, Iām happy to tip. You donāt get tipped for doing your job.
I really like to tip a person if they did a good service. Why not? I was in places where i paid people and they did bad work. Then i see someone doing the same job but putting more effort. I want to tell them i appreciate their work and make their day. So I find tipping to be a good Thing. I live in a poor country where tipping people means a family will have more to eat for the rest of the month
As a former server and then pizza boy, I'd like to say that not everyone can just get a skilled profession. With that said a mufucka with a nice smile and attention to customers can make a shit ton of cashola! The pics you've displayed is just begging.
United states wages for restaurant servers is abysmal.
Tipping should not be required, these places need to start paying realistic wages.
