Do you break spaghetti in half before you cook it?

I have been breaking my spaghetti in half for years. It kid of just started in elementary school when I would make spaghetti. One day I had a friend over and I was going to make spaghetti but the pots my mom had were too small. My friend said to break it in half so it fits. I’ve been doing it ever since because I don’t care for long noodles anyway.

Now these days, as I got a different friend group, those friends make fun of me for breaking my spaghetti and joke that I’m disappointing Italians. I personally don’t care if they do that but I want to know if other people do this too?

But this reminds me of when my uncle was making spaghetti, and I saw him break the pasta in half before putting it in the water. The look on my face was enough to make him laugh.

I break mine in thirds. When I was growing up, I would cook a lot and when I made spaghetti, my dad demanded I break them in thirds 🙄

Yeah, I do the same. My standard pot (for 1-2 portions) is too small for full-length spaghetti and the large pot (4-6 portions) I only use when cooking for guests.

I always do and I don't care what the Italians think of me. It's my food, my kitchen, and I'm the one cooking. If you don't like how I cook, then YOU can cook. And before anyone says "just twirl your fork", I already do that too. The noodles are still long; even when broken in half. They're just not AS long compared to full ones. Plus breaking them in half gives the illusion that you have more.

i don't for myself but i do when i cook for work like tonight. breaking it in half helps me measure out the servings as well.
