What should we rename the aubergine/egg plant?

"Eggplant” in English goes back only to 1767. Before that, they went under the name of Melongena (mad apple), pomme de rage. (Rage apple) or Malum Insanam (evil insane).

Thankfully, people saw sense and settled on aubergine, which allegedly means "fart stopper." While most of the world calls it aubergine (or equivalent), a few places still call it eggplant, egg veg, egg fruit, etc. But it hasn't looked like an egg for ages, has it?

So if it doesn't look like an egg, and Americans don't like the word aubergine, what should we rename it? What's a more fitting word for today we can all enjoy that reflects its modern shape and colour?
