Winter officially arrived where I am at. I am missing my mom’s weekly homemade soup she would make during the winter months.

Ya know what, I started making a variety of soups for the very first time, a couple years ago. And I am NOT a cook. But from trying a ton of different soups, I would say my top ‘winter’ (which doesn’t really ever show up where I live) soups would be:
* Easy, basic Chicken noodle soup (with minor tweaks)
* There was an Irish website I came across— some lady’s ‘Celtic cooking warrior blog’ a long time ago, and she had the most simple hearty soup that I’ve perfected: Onion, Potato soup, with carrot confetti in it—it is outstanding and super easy, and remarkable for how few ingredients are in there—and I imagine it being perfect for Minnesota or Canada level winter storms.
* Finally, my other go-to winter soup is (I kid you not) homemade Broccoli Cheddar soup. Now, this soup I have made probably like 150x’s —it is ABSOLUTELY delicious, and I never had tasted any version of that soup before, although I had heard of it— but so I really didn’t have any expectations. As I am sure you know, some people grew up eating many versions of that soup, and might have some preconceptions about taste and texture. But that aside, I got this specifically from a video on YouTube, called “31 One Pot Recipes” which is like 30 mins long, and has literally MILLIONS of views, and everyone I’ve turned on to this recipe has flipped over it. It is so good. …. and I hate cooking. I’m much better at cleaning!
I wish my boyfriend liked to cook, but him and I both hate it, and will sometimes give it a shot—we are good judges of what is in our skill set and what is not, so we don’t fu*k sh*t up too badly.

Peas soup.
This soup bases on slow cooked veggie-beef stock, dried whole peas and smoked ham pieces.
It's often cooked on drive hunts in 200L mobile military pots for people who drive wild out of the woods. This is the taste of late autumn. Peas don't cook to mush like potatoes, beans and other veggies that's why this soup can be cooked in such huge pots and somehow this soup tastes better cooked in such huge mass than cooked in 6L pot at home.
OK, that's one that slipped my mind. Yes, I love homemade pea soup with ham.
Oh man, in general I could live off soups. I love em. But if I had to choose 3 for winter it would be...
It is amazing. The aroma, the taste. Like I said, a gourmet opener for a multi course dinner party. And almost no one has ever had it. So it's a conversation starter.
Oh and another great thing about it. It does really well if made a day ahead of time and stuck in the fridge for a day or two. The spices do very well when reheated. One less thing to do the day of the actual dinner.
Pro tip. Meaning I had to find a solution in a pinch. No cheesecloth in your kitchen? No problem. grab a paper coffee filter. Pound the whole spices to pulverize them into coarse chunks in one filter. That one is gonna get beat up in the process. Take the pulverized spices and pour them into a second coffee filter, fold up the paper to close it up and use a stapler to keep it shut. Toss that packet into the soup pot. When done, just toss the coffee filter with the spices. Same as cheesecloth. Cheap. Easy. And a lot of people have drip coffee makers and therefore paper filters on hand.
Yup, ingenuity in a pinch.
Tried to DM you a photo of the recipe but I can never figure out who has to be following who on this platform to be able to message anyone, LOL. And it seems you can't insert a photo into a reply, only an opinion. And there are no edits allowed to the single opinion we're allowed to post. Ergo sharing anything in a conversation here is all but impossible.
So here's the cookbook. Julie Sahni, Classic Indian Cooking. $25 0n Amazon, page 142.

Oh and butter works as a substitute for the ghee in the recipe. Clarified or not.
french onion is my favorite. I also really like creamy chicken tortilla if it's a little spicy
lol are you creamy too?
@Tamera952 I'm middle PA right now at school (PSU). My hometown, is up on a Great Lake and gets lots of lake effect snow. I think we average 110" a year? Something like that.
@Tamera952 Lucky duck. Had a look at one of the yacht club webcams in Erie, PA. ----> 🥶
Not too bad yesterday. But I'm hearing a bunch of accidents have been happening today :/
thanks for the MHO!
lol basically... I only get like two a month :P
A soul-warming bowl of Zuppa Toscana is my go-to winter favorite. The creamy, savory flavors of this Italian classic, with its blend of spicy sausage, tender kale, and hearty potatoes, truly capture the essence of comfort on a chilly day. A version I once had in a small Tuscan village remains etched in memory. Its simplicity and depth made it a standout amidst the cozy background of the Italian countryside. 🌿🍲
Zuppa Toscana sounds delicious.

In the winter, I like soups like pumpkin soup, and others with lots of vegetables as in "Nabe" soups" and hot-pots. I once made a delicious pumpkin soup that was creamy and sweet at the same time. Hot pots have a broth and many vegetables and proteins in it. Does the one in the picture contain tofu, or are those turnips? Looks delicious.
It is soup season but this one I’d gladly make any time of year. That soup is French Onion Soup. Anytime I’m at a restaurant I hope they have this soup before my meal. The flavor of all those cooked onions and the delicious baked cheese on top, and you can’t forget about the bread that soaks up delicious broth. I can’t say enough good things about this soup. Talking about this soul makes me want to go make some right now.
I’m a soup fanatic this time of year😭. My staples are :
Chicken Tortilla
Hot Pot (I make a hot pot like once a week no joke😩💀)
Pho
Ramen (not top ramen)
Cabbage/veggie soup (I make a batch, portion and freeze them all)
Chicken and gnocchi
These are my top faves!
I have several favorites, but let's say Cream Of Wild Mushroom soup 😋

That looks yummy.
It is, very yummy, you should try it.
We make really good homemade chicken soup which is just awesome for sitting by the woodstove with on a cold winters day and there just seems to be something about chicken soup that warms u up a little extra special somehow.
Wow, that's an excellent question.
I definitely enjoy a good beef and barley yet a hearty tomato is great and stuffed pepper is awesome, yet cream of potatoes and bacon is beyond excellent. Chicken Noodle is great as well especially when you are under the weather.
To warm up I love Carrot-Ginger (or Squash) are the two go-to at home, but I love Stracciatella and Avgolemono if I'm not feeling well.
Which reminds me of one of my fave spoof videos:::
It's not even close to winter temps down here in southern Spain, rather spring temperatures. So 'winter soup' is not on my mind right now.
I suppose it would have to be based on vegetables and chicken. Full of nutrients and of course served hot.

Pasta e fagioli is my all time favorite soup & after that chicken noodle soup.
Soup at 9am? You’re in college the only soup you should be having is the kind of soup that comes in shot glasses. Hahaha.
I’ll send you some warmer weather & I shouldn’t mention that I’m wearing shorts right now. Enjoy your soup & hopefully you don’t run into The Soup Nazi.
Ground Turkey
Mushrooms
Onions
Green Beans
Tarragon
Paprika
Black Pepper
American Cheese
I cook until the onions are almost dissolved into a soup but you can choose the way you would like your onions to be. Good luck
My favorite winter soup is my wife's chicken noodle soup. It was so delicious and if I wasn't feeling well it would make me feel so much better after I finished eating it
Cream of potato soup. With some bacon or ham in it. Perfect for cold winter evenings. And it's easy to make, and it keeps well so you can make enough for several meals.
That’s a tough choice!
I make a mean split pea soup and my mom’s chicken noodle soup, but I think my favorite is homemade French onion.
Cream of mushroom from the can. Makes no sense… I hate mushrooms but for whatever reason that stuff is delicious so me.
I cannot stand mushrooms. I literally cannot eat them. But for whatever reason that soup just hits straight into my soul
I make Chicken noodle, Tomato Bisque, Country Vegetable, Chicken & Dumplings and French Onion at home. I think the family likes the Chicken & Dumplings the best of all.
Cream chicken and wild rice from Panera. It’s really great for winter, season of cough cold and flu.

Oxtail soup
Homemade beef and barley with root vegetables soup.
I’d go with pea and ham soup. My partner would make them when it’s cold
I have a cream of potato soup I make every so often. It is so thick a spoon will almost stand up in it.
I love an old fashioned ham and pea soup... hearty, healthy and filling.
I actually prefer gumbo over a soup. Chicken and sausage and maybe throw in some white beans.
1. Pho
2. Italian Wedding
3. French onion.
4. Creamy potato.
5. Tuscan
I love it when my mom makes her homemade chicken noodle soup in the crockpot.
I like broccoli cheddar, onion soup, and cabbage soup
It’s a hispanic dish, but basically it’s meatballs inside of like a chicken broth with vegetables
Almost anything without fish, crustaceans, cilantro or a Svoille rating of over 2,000.
Thai or Korean beef soup is great. I also make a French Onion soup and an Italian Ribolitta.
