The laws often don't protect women from male stalkers like ex-boyfriends and strangers. link If he walks outside her house, the cops can't do anything. It's not fair. Restraining orders are useless, and often anger the stalker, so the woman is more likely to be in danger if she files one.
diegoD, then why would I get blamed if I got raped by someone I knew? Why do women get accused of lying whenever a boyfriend beats them or calls them horrible things? When proven, why do people say the woman deserved it? There is misogyny in this country based on how we carry out the law, not in the laws themselves. This is a matter of de facto, not de jure.
Dudebrodude: Again, if most women were strong enough for it, and the military itself wasn't so hostile toward women, then it wouldn't be an issue. I feel that biological differences are important to consider and may limit what men and women can do (within reason, as combat/physical capability seems to be the main difference, as there are female scientists, doctors, etc.), but sadly a lot of people use that difference as a justification to say women are inferior beings in terms of worth.
Feminism seeks to transcend social gender norms. But in practically due to biological differences this seems sometimes impossible. By assigning particular roles such as the draft based on gender, we retain a certain level of gender roles.
You've proven it yourself with evidence and research that it's absurdly impractical to enlist women in the army, but are certain gender specific roles just going to have to exist then when it comes to feminism in the end?
Also, I should mention that the military is a very patriarchal system, like a "good ol' boys" club, hence the prevalence of rape and sexual harassment toward females. The rules are different, and we can't expect an "egalitarian" military population when they system is hostile to women as is. We have both the physical weakness and an extra orifice to rape...
"Infantry troops routinely carry backpacks with 60 or 70 pounds of gear, or even more. The most common injury in Afghanistan is caused by roadside bombs. This raises the question of whether a female combat soldier would be able to carry a 200-pound male colleague who has been wounded."
There's probably a very tiny percentage of women who would meet the physical standards that men have to face. Then, it would be fair (assuming she doesn't have a baby who needs her to breastfeed or significant female health issues that would bring her unnecessary pain when she should be focusing on fighting).
As for occupational neutrality, I believe everyone should be allowed to do anything IF they have the skills needed to perform. No women in this one study I heard on NPR could meet the physical standards to be in an elite squad in the army. Having most women fight in combat anyway, (even if they are strong *for women*) is wrong because they are highly likely to still be sucky compared to the men. It's wrong to lower the standards and throw in a few weaklings like me in for "equality."
That was a serious question, not a troll attempt I assure you.
I am asking questions about this certain subject because at first glance the whole circumstance seems extremely muddled in regards to gender equality. I know feminists to agree to a gender equal draft while others have positioned themselves elsewhere. I understand that the "right answer" may not exist but I am curious anyway.
If that is too much to tackle, and your only response is "troll," then you have hurt your cause.
DiegoD, if you paid a little more attention to the messages sent in our culture and media, you would see that America is not as feminist as it should be. It's mostly a man's world, where things geared toward men are "gender-neutral" while things that have some women as an audience are "for girls, ewww!" Like here: link
Good article, but I disagree with the stance on #9.
You've said it yourself that women are quite capable in doing any job that a man can do but #9 contradicts this statement.
Yes , women are in general less physically capable as men, and there are much huge potential dangers for women in combat, but at the end of the day that particular stance still seems particularly biased towards one particular gender.
I feel like just the whole draft issue is too muddled to take a stance on atm.
I just wanted to share something that I heard in high school that I found absolutely appauling. My sophomore year of high school, a freshman girl had expressed her hatred for women who are raped, claiming that they deserve it, for not fighting back. I think many people are not only uneducated about this subject, but ignorant towards it. I found it appauling that she would say such a thing, when rape victims could very well be in that classroom. Good article.
Any women who is a feminist will never get respect from men. OK maybe 5% of men will, but the majority will not respect women who are feminists. So pick your poison. What feminism stands for and actual promotes are two different things. The later is destructive to society and young women and is predicated on completely false information and baseless ideology. Take your feminists bullsh*t to the middle east where they really need it. Those women have to think western women are a joke.
Nice article! I believe the largest issue about feminism is the word. Feminism. Feminists. The word itself implies that there is just one kind of gender equality theory, political movement and/or ideology, and one kind of people who believes in it. Much like liberals, conservatists etc. Feminism is just an umbrella term for so many things, and more often it is perceived negatively because most people are only faced with the finger pointers.
Birth control pills are often used for health reasons. I take it not because of sex, but because my quality of life is better with it (you try having migraines, horrible cramps, and explosive mood swings every month). Denying a woman the pill for that -is- misogyny.
I don't ignore what's out there in other countries, but sadly there's nothing I can really do about what goes on there other than spread awareness.
We need to stop teaching girls to tolerate such behavior stemming from those concepts, and teach boys that those concepts are wrong. It's a matter of achieving peace through correcting dysfunction. Hate is dysfunction. Some people will always choose the dysfunctional beliefs, but education is key.
So, fighting for the right to vote/wear what we want/own property, get equal respect (based on merit, not gender), and the acknowledgment of what rape really is, as well as the right to have opportunities (again, based on merit) to work our butts off in school and our careers is a bunch of "unequal rights?" Riiiight.
Ludorock, you are so right. However, there are some women out there (and men!) who believe in equality yet will not identify as feminist, which is their choice, but I want to help educate people about what feminism is before they make that choice, as I feel that way too many people think we are all militant, cold women trying to be men.
There is no myth-busting to be done. Men (and women) who hate feminists are just going to exist like that forever. They have an opinion, they don't like something and that is that. A lot of men who hate feminism I've found are just resentful towards women in general for various reasons.

I guess here's where I disagree on the logic here, or rather I don't completely understand where you are coming from.
Are you for occupational neutrality? ( Seeing as in everyone can do everything equally)
Or do you believe gender roles should exist to an extent based on certain biological circumstances. (Men fight wars, Women are primary parents?)
