"I like you as a person ..." Meaning? (From a guy to a girl, or a girl to a guy)

this confuses me, because if I say this it is a GOOD thing.

It means I respect you as who you are & what you do, irrespective of my personal feelings towards you I hold you in high regard.

Where as I could think a 'friend' is totally ridiculous, but it is just their quirky way, lol I accept it wouldn't want to be it. :)

BUT I'm not sure if OTHER people have the same view... I'm not sure why it needs to be qualified.

I have had someone recently say this to me...my first response was "what does that even mean?" I thought it was negative. I had just mentioned to him that I felt used for just sex...and he said he liked me as a person and also was very physically attracted to me.

Maybe I'm wrong, but after I thought about it. I think it was his way of trying to say he had feelings for me.

After I asked again "What does that even mean?" He said, "I think you're great." Still frustrating to me.

I would much rather a guy just say "I have feelings for you" ...

yeah I can't tell if its a way iof saying I like you ass a PERSON ont as something ELSE.

But maybe they were saying that they did not JUST feel attraction.

Actually when we met, he said he always thought I was cute wanted to get to know me

( I was offended lol cause it was just physical).... - Maybe its like saying , I respect you as well..?

Helps you ( cause it sure confuses me,lol) but two days later we had this big blowout - we ALMOST had sex, but luckily he was being a jerk, I think deep down he did not want to have sex, at that time, it felt wrong , & I'm a virgin which he said he did not know, but I think he knew on some level)

So then we had a sort of fight for a couple of hours, he went on about all the things I supposedly did to get in the way if him telling me how he felt.... He said ^he never lost feelings for me^ -

Anyways, maybe he was just saying that, or maybe he meant it.

If he meant he never lost them, then that would include two days ago, so he's know that WHILE he was saying he liked me as a person.

so some guys I know have said that it could mean he respects you if he says that, but yeah respect comes thru actions, & I feel like the qualification, is to-

Purposefully make I ambiguous, you now maybe its means he LIKES you, maybe it means he likes you just as a friend... Well who knows but I wish that guy of yours could have been a bit more forthcoming.

I wonder iof he likes you, but doesn't want to say it, but wants to lol, still its a weird thing to say to someone lol

To me, depending on the context, it could just be a way of saying that they like you for more than your body.

Could mean a lot of things though, depending on the context.

I didn't think of it that way, I mean I now he is really attracted to me, but I did not think liking someone is separate from their body - to me if I like someone I like ALLLL of them, interesting if that is what he meant....wonder if he said that cause he was being defensive cause he just likes me for my body lol

or because he actually makes a distinction between body & person in general on a regular basis.

Well, you said he was attracted to you, so it probably doesn't mean he's not interested. Most likely he was just trying to reassure that he appreciated the whole of you and not just the body. Sometimes women feel like they're just being used for how they look (which is also probably sometimes true), so it was likely just a reassurance that he liked your personality too.

Ok. So by your saying 'probably' there is a chance 4 some other meaning.

ex. He likes me as an friend, but not as in 'like- interested' in me , as more.

( I know he 'likes' me, more than just an acquaintance, & I'm pretty sure he knows that, but I want to know what he wants me to believe)

He must recognize that saying it that way is confusing.. I wonder if he wanted 2 keep it ambiguous 2 see which thing I latched on 2.
