this (in my opinion) handsome guy at the gym smiled at me and he’s ripped so I thought ah maybe he’s a personal trainer or he’s just trying to encourage me to keep coming then i realised he was just a normal guy getting his workout in and I was thinking shoot, I’m here with my father if I smile back he might not realise this and approach me.

For one, whatever your excuse was, that was rude. You didn't smile back or at least wave to return the greeting. If he thinks you're a B****, it's because you probably came off as one. That's rude and awkward to have someone look at you and not return a greeting.

Just have some manners and Don't make something out of nothing. A smile is not an invitation or flirty gesture

I look at it this way everyone's got their own battles they're fighting. If I smile at someone I'm just trying to put a little positivity out in the world. A smile at the right time to the right person can turn their whole day around. I don't need a smile back. I'm not looking for anyone's approval.
