I went to ulta the other day and left with a new insecurity. I walking in looking for some lip gloss just strolling around the store when a associate asked me if I needed help. Long story short she comes out with the lip gloss I wanted and then started talking about how I needed a lip mask for the dark corners on my lips , then went on to say she a nutritionist and that I could change up my diet etc. I’ve been struggling with eczema and discoloration since I was a child but I didn’t know my mouth looked “disgusting “. She said because it the first contact people make … I felt like crying but I let her carry on and direct me to a $20 lip mask. A part of me is saying she’s only trying to help but another part of me saying that she’s wrong for doing that. I’ve been thing about this for days.
This went from amusing to sad REALLY fast. Please don't let this sales-girl get-in-your head. She wasn't trying to help you. She doesn't give a fuck about you, or how you look. She wants to SELL.
That's what happened here.
This was not a random stranger giving you some "harsh but true" constructive criticism.
This was someone with a FINANCIAL INTEREST in convincing you that you're in need of what she's selling.
It would be funny, if I didn't know that you're absolutely dead-serious when you say "I've been thinking about this for days".
Funny, because... "dark corners of your lips"? Really? Are you being serious right now? Get-the-fuck-outta-here. That's some really really silly shit.
I've known a lot of women, moreover I have seen many more women in my 37 years on this planet. I have never, ever, not once thought to myself: "yea... but the corner's of her lips are too dark". Not one time! I am confident that the same can be said for every single other person on this plannet. "dark corners of your lips" are not a thing! This was invented by this girl to up-sell you.
You know how on infomercials, they make mundane easy shit like "cleaning the tub" out to be an over-the-top giant struggle. Like the woman will just be killing herself trying to clean the tub "the old way".
They invented a problem (it's... not all that hard to clean a tub, nobody struggles with it like the chick on the infomercial) to convince you that "you need to buy what they're selling". That's the same exact thing here.
This girl 'invented a problem' (dark corners of your lips) to convince you that "you need to buy what she's selling".
I feel like you know all this. But the fact that you're letting this get into your head at all... means you need to remind yourself again. THis was just capitalism. You're every-bit as pretty as you thought you were a week ago... nobody you've ever met has noticed anything specific about the corners of your lips (I promise).
Please don't let her one-time-upsell convince you you've got a problem that you don't really have.
C'mon girl! 🙂

Women's ability to be casually mean to each to other never ceases to amaze me. When someone gives me unsolicited advice, I typically just say "thank you for sharing your thoughts; I'll keep that in mine."

I take it and then I go thanks. Just a pro tip, anyone can be a “nutritionist.” Only dietitians are board certified. I doubt someone working at Ulta has the authority to advise you on your diet.
Brush that bs off. She was just trying to up sale you
