Was it mean of me to tell my boyfriend his breath stinks like this?

So first of all my boyfriend likes to joke in a way that I don’t like. Its roasting which means basically ridiculing someone in a joking way for anybody who doesn’t know. I don’t think it’s automatically a bad thing but sometimes he doesn’t know when to quit and I tell him it’s not how I play but he says I just need to be less sensitive and learn to joke back. So that’s just a bit of backstory. Well the other day his breath smelled. We’re all human, it could have been something he ate or whatever. He usually smells really good all the time so I just tried to ignore it. But he jokingly said my breath stink and I flipped it on him and said his smelled horrible which he knew I wasn’t joking. Then I tried to play it off like I was learning how to roast back. But he could obviously tell from the way I said it that I was serious. I wasn’t trying to be mean but I did tell him that I wasn’t into all the roasting stuff and I wouldn’t have said anything on account of how good he usually smells.
