I think an adequate response to being an emotional sponge would be to simply cut them off, no? Yes, it will hurt, but it would hurt more if you just stayed with them and allowed them to use your love. The only way to be able to care for others is to care for yourself, so give the subject of unrequited love a choice. You or the one that they complain about, and just leave a note with your phone number or some way to contact you with a decision if they decide on you. Because you need love, too, and no one is an endless well of love and compassion.

What many people don't get is that there's a special bond between male and female friends which is hard to get with a girlfriend and sometimes even with a friend of the same gender. I would much rather have any of my beautiful and attractive female friends stay friends than anything else.
No one likes having to reject someone they truly care about, so it's not just the one who gets rejected who feels bad. If it pains you so much to see her with someone else, then just leave. It's not worth waiting around for someone who's probably not going to change his/her mind anyway.
And trust me, I know this "nice guy" type because I used to be one of them. So I know how they think. And please, stay "nice" but make sure that it's not the only quality you have.

Yeah I'm tired hearing the women want assholes and hate nice guys spiel. Just cause a woman didn't want you doesn't mean she wants an asshole. And thinking being a decent human being with manners should give you brownie points is ridiculous. It just means she is not meant for you and you will find someone else who is. But this whole " I'm so nice so why won't she let date/bang her" type thinking needs to stop. The right woman will come, don't give up or be discouraged.

I love your sarcastic tone lol The moment I stopped feeling bad for a guy I knew who was friendzoned by my friend for almost a year was when I finally got to meet his best friend. He told me why he didn't feel bad.. so when even his best friend who should be on his side didn't even feel that my friend did anything wrong, I knew I shouldn't be either.

They are just trying to be what women say they want in a man, even though in real life they would never date such guys, even if they were the last men on planet. True. I had a best guy friend and he started flirting with me. After a few weeks I told him that I didn't have the same so he would stop. He cussed me out and spread rumors but I was in the "popular" group at the time before I moved schools. So nobody believed anything he said. Long Story short I thought of him more of a older brother than a crush
